carter w-o carb problems

Hey guys, I'm new here. I have a 51 3A with the L134 and the carter w-o. I rebuilt the carburetor because one day while it was running it started pooling gas on the top part of the carburetor. It was seeping up through the slots in the top of the fuel bowl cover (like where the plunger rod slot is). Also while it would be sitting there, engine off-the carb would just drop little droplets of fuel constantly into the engine. So I rebuilt it, new plunger, new needle and seat, and the other odds and ends that come in a low-end rebuild kit. It was doing the exact same thing so I played with my float level adjustment and it became PERFECT. I let it run, I drove it around, and it did so well. It sat over the weekend and now its doing the exact same thing. I'm scratching my head here. I've played with the float level adjustment again, I can't get it to stop doing it. HELP!

Welcome.

Sounds like the fuel is percolating from engine heat. Is the fat gasket installed between the carb and manifold? Is the heat riser working and not frozen in the closed position? Which fuel pump are you running, with or without vacuum? If with vacuum, is the spacer there between the pump and block? Readjusting the float isn't the answer. Set it to factory spec (3/8" without the gasket in place) and forget it, the problem lies elsewhere.

I had this exact same problem when my first W/O Carter Carb was rebuilt. It ended up being a microscopic hole in the float that caused it to fill with gas and sink. I suggest checking your float to be sure! �;)

Also could possibly be dirt lodging between the needle and seat.

I have the fat gasket installed. I don't think the heat riser is installed, if you are talking about that lever thing mounted below the carb. I tried moving that lever while the engine ran and it would push itself back over from where I was pushing it to. I'll have to check on the fuel pump. How can I tell if it is with or without vacuum? Thanks for all the help guys!

Gasket is good, sounds like the heat riser is working. A fuel pump with vacuum will have 4 lines to it instead of 2.

no, mine has 2 lines. the carburetor HAD some round regulator thing hooked up to it before. it had a knob with 1-5 on it. but then again it also had a boat fuel tank with a hand held primer....

That round thing sounds like a pressure regulator which means the previous owner had the same problem. I'm wondering if for some reason your fuel pump might be putting out too much pressure. Have you checked your carb float to see if it's got any fuel inside from a pinhole?

You may have to much fuel pressure. I had to make some gaskets that add up to a little over 1/8" to get the fuel pressure within specs. You could also have a bed needle and seat or a bad float as Chasm suggested.

I'm thinking to much fuel pressure.

But...can you have too much fuel pressure with the WO?  Don't they run on like up to 12 lbs. or more?  I know the Solex likes it low, but the Carter?

The Willys factory manual says 3 3/4 psi @ 1800 rpm for the CJ3. I think mine is just under that but I put a pressure gauge on in line with the pump and carb and ran the engine at idle and well above 1800 and the pressure never got over 4 psi. Honestly, I think 3 psi would do just fine.
