Transfer case and gear box oil levels ?

I don't know if i've got this right.
If i fill the gear box it will slowly fill the transfer box via a hole.
So if i put oil in (L/h g box filler plug) i should wait and top it up?
Did the early boxes not drain that's why the transfer box has a fill plug ?
I'm sure i read somewhere that the early boxes used a seal in between
but they did away with it, am i on the right track ?
I guess my question is - Whats the fill procedure...

Early jeeps did have a seal between the transmission and transfer case but CJ-3As do not. Here is a web-page that explains this....

The transfer case will fill VERY slowly when adding fluid through the transmission. Be sure to check the level in each gearbox and do not assume they are full.

I decided to put a speedi sleeve on the output flange and emptied the T Case and Trans, took the shifter out and poured in 3.7 litres of
gear oil, now no leak and confident of levels, bit rough but it worked...
