Wiring Harness From Walcks
« on: December 26, 2010, 09:50:14 AM »
One of the Jeep related things my wife bought me for Christmas was a wiring harness from Walcks.  ;D

I don't know how many members also own their wiring harness, but if you're sitting on the fence about it; take the plunge !!

When I took it from the box, I was amazed at the quality and detail they put into it.  Every attention to detail was taken.  They didn't use standard electrical tape where needed, they used friction tape.  The cloth covering used is about as OEM as you can get.  All terminals are the correct type and size.

When I was working on my Willys, my arm brushed against the wiring, and the covering literally fell off, exposing a green tarnished wire beneath.  I knew when it came time to fire this puppy up I'd be chasing shorts for weeks.  I told my wife, "wiring is shot".  When I also said, "Hope this thing doesn't burn down our house", I think that somewhat motivated her in this "gift".   :)

If you're thinking about buying the harness, don't hesitate !

I agree with what mud pie and rocketeer have said about a new "purchased" wiring harness.  As many of you know, I restored my own 1949 CJ-3A, and simultaneously restored a friend's 1944 Willys MB (multiple pics of both are posted on the old forum).  I thought I would save some money and make my own wiring harness because it looked to be such a simple harness.  I thought I could surely do it in just an afternoon.  I crimped and then soldered each connection.  It turned out well, but instead of an afternoon, it took me nearly 3 days to complete.  Not wanting to go through that again I purchased the harness for the MB.

One thing to be aware of, the purchased harness is manufactured to be installed into an original application.  It will need to be altered to fit any altered circuitry that may exist in your particular Jeep, i.e., fuse box, alternator, fuses, different lighting, etc.

My Jeep had the wiring changed over the years, some of it the cloth wire and some plastic covered. Since I was not doing a restoration to like new condition I just completely wired it with new wire. I didn't completely follow the wiring diagram in the manual, I did it the way I thought it should be.

If I were doing a complete restoration I would have bought a wiring loom.

My goal wasn't authenticity or restoration, mine was simplicity and safety. Sure, the  wiring on these things is incredibly simple, but I figured by the time I bought all the right connections, various gauge wires, etc., I'd be into it more than what it cost to click "add to cart".

Sometimes its cheaper to let others do the work for ya...a lesson I learned while replacing a section of my fence that blew down. Took me 2 days to dig up the posts, set new ones in concrete and nail up new fencing. I asked a landscaper what he would've charged, his price was only 50 bucks higher than my cost.

I could've sat on my back porch sipping ice tea watching HIM get heat stroke and large blisters on his hands...

Keep in mind that Walck's builds variations of the harness. They will modify it for such things as turn signals, if requested.

I'll second Larry on that.  When I talked to Carl Walck he let me know that when I was ready to order the wiring harness, just call and talk to him directly.  He would add the turn signals and whatever else I needed to the harness, I just had to tell him directly and not order it over the computer.

I can't say enough about Walck's, they have been a HUGE help on my project and really great guys to deal with!  ;D

yesterday I tried to order a gas tank plus a cocu;le of other things from Walks, and the site would not take the order.  I then called the order in, and they said they were having occasional problems with the on line ordering.  Gave the order and info over the phone to them.  This morning I had an email from Carl, saying he saw I was having trouble ordering on-line, and to call him this AM and he will fix me up.  Told him I did that yesterday.  But the point is, how many times have you ever seen someone pay attention to details like that?  Jim

When I first bought parts for my Jeep I used Walck's. I tried the online thing and it didn't work so I called and he said they always have trouble with it. At that point I decided to order by phone and I prefer that anyway. They are always helpful and back up what they sell.

When I ordered parts for my tranny and transfer case I ordered from a place that mostly did trannys and that worked very well.

It seems like I order something from Walck's once a month.

Walcks is in the process of upgrading the website and hopefully it will solve those problems.

I called once about an order, and when I gave them my last name, they chuckled, then apologized, and said they remember my name. Trust me, my last name is one of those names that make you think it HAS to be fake !! ;D

I used the same line I used for years..."Try going through the Marine Corps with that name !" Always garnishes another chuckle...

But I agree, great people to deal with and they've been getting bi-weekly orders from me since August. Just ask my wife.... :)

I only use Walcks harnesses in my restorations and have always been pleased with the quality and workmanship.
Willys is better then Ford! Proove? They don't stample their parts for warranty.
