L4 Engine Hoist Attachment Points

I'm going to pull the engine from my CJ3A and was wondering if anyone can recommend where on the block to attach the hoist chain. I've seen photos of attachments to the head studs.  Does that sound like a good idea?

Because of the off balance nature of the L134 I used a lifting strap around the engine, with 2 x 6 boards on each side after removing distributor, oil fill tube, manifolds, etc. The straps were more on the drivers side than the passenger side.My neighbor used chains across the front an rear drivers side cylinder head bolts f(using longer bolts).  It came out fairly straight that way too. The studs for the head bolts on my engine are long enough to put a 1/4" plate under and still have plenty of threads for the nut. Just one stud is strong enough to lift way more than the engine weights so if you use just two studs at the center of the block it should be enough. If you use one chain at the center, front to rear, it will easy to tilt the engine as needed to remove and install it.

It may be easier to pull the tranny and transfer cases and then pull the engine. If you don't be very careful to move the engine forward enough to get the clutch assembly off the tranny input shaft.

I use an engine leveler and four chains to the head studs.  Don't use the back two studs or they may hit the firewall.

Ditto on the engine leveler.  If you don't have one, it certainly makes things easier when taking engines in and out.  Harbor Freight will run sales on these occasionally....

Wow!  Thanks for all the input and ideas.  The photo's are particularly helpful.  I'll look into the engine leveler.

I have a CJ3A drive train and frame and I'm building up from there.  The photos are the best yet to see how all the linkages and lines come together (since mine was missing many engine pieces, and those that did come with it were disassembled.
