Oil Seal for Glass-bowl Fuel Pump
« on: November 13, 2010, 11:18:57 PM »
I recently rebuilt my fuel pump (no vacuum ports), but the kit did not have the oil seal that is under the diaghram/spring.  The original is quite stiff and brittle, I re-used it because I had no choice.

I would prefer replacing it, as I can only see this failing quite quickly.  How important is this seal ?  Is it feasible to drill a hole (ala M38 pump mod) ?

Does anyone know of a source of just the seal, being I've already replaced everything else ?

Are you talking about the one against the engine?  If so try Carquest that is where I got mine from.  Also Ron at the g503.com sells parts and Walcks.

Nope, not the mounting gasket...

The oil seal is under the spring that flexes the diaphragm.  The diaphragm post goes through the seal and connects to the rocker link.

I was waiting for someone to ask, have you called Walck's or any of the other Jeep parts places? Did you call the place you got your kit, maybe the part was left out by accident?

I bought it from Walcks, the kit came in a box, so I assumed all was intact. I doubt if it was missing they'd open another kit to give me mine (or was that was what happened and I got the kit with the "removed" piece ? Hmmmm.)

The kit was 31 bucks or so on Walcks, they also have a entire replacement pump for 41 bucks, I should've just dropped the extra 10 bucks, but I doubted it would be like my existing pump....

Call em, talk to em and ask em.  They will tell you if you were supposed to get that part or not in the kit.   They may also have the part you need separately if it was not in the kit.   Walcks has always sided with making the customer happy in my experience.  Carl is smart enough not to lose your business over a $3 rubber seal.  Plus they are usually willing to give a lot of free advice without sounding as if you are bothering them and without talking down to you.  (unlike one or two other parts suppliers who will remain unmentioned.)

I agree with ya about Walcks, they've supplied about 99.8% of my parts so far !! I've been placing weekly (yes, weekly !!) orders with them since August (much to my wifes chagrin), and they have been outstanding as far as service, and amazing in shipping.

I just didn't want to bother them with a "was I supposed to get...." kind of question. But I guess you're right; a simple phone call is in order.

I'll give them a call tomorrow.
