Air Intake Modification

Thought that I would try this for the Fall Color Tour to get more power up the mountains. Hope it helps but I will convert it back to original when I get home.

Is it a turbo? ;)

I've read that the original air filtration is quite efficient if kept clean.

What we should try... 

Bring the original setup too.  Same hill, same weather conditions.  Climb the hill at full throttle. Swap out the system and climb it again.  Record speeds and any required downshifts and where they occur.  Write a full tech report for the Willys community.

Or...

We don't do any of this and just have a kick *rear end time at the FCT. 8-)

Wouldn't the smallest diameter opening in the air intake system limit the amount of air that can get in?  I've run my 3a without the intake hooked up at all and it still seems to run the same.  But Hawky is right...this may be a question to be resolved by SCIENCE!   ;) :-? ;D

A turbo AND a supercharger!  Yes, we are going to need science for sure, and definitely a few cold beers at the end of the day! 8-)

I worked for the company that designed and sold that OEM filtration system to Willys, and I concur, spending our time on the Science of Cold Beer makes a lot of sense to me !!!

Just thought that I would give you all an update to the filter modification. After a very successful Fall Color Tour and a trip up to Mt. Princeton (12,000') I can actually say the filter worked great for me. I will run this setup next FCT or high altitude trails.


I noticed a favorable increase in power the first part of the week on a hill near the hot springs on highway 321. Those of you that know this hill can attest to the steep incline. In the past years I had to put the jeep on low 3rd gear to get up hill. This year I did the hill in 2nd high. I do not have an overdrive so I am gear challenged!


I plan on doing a gas milage test in the near future to see if there is any improvement. On my original setup I have a Donaldson filter with the oil breather converted to a paper filter (inside) setup.

Just remember, if you go in the water those dry filters will let water into your intake.

I suspect you are right about that!  I have a pre-filter coming which is supposed to help a lot, but will have to be careful in any case.  Thanks!

Tom If you get that high in water we may have a bigger problem! But very nice setup. I hope you have favorable results as I did. Just be sure your brakes are in good working condition. An extra 10 - 15hp will send you and the dogs flying! :)
