full flow oil filter modification
« on: March 12, 2016, 10:07:47 AM »
Somewhere, I remember someone converting the original bypass oil filter into a full flow oil filter. They drilled and tapped the hole in the block the goes from the oil pump to the oil galley and put a 1/4 pipe plug in and then drilled the side of the passage for the oil line up to the filter. Then the return line from the filter was run to the oil galley. Only thing I can't remember is what was done with the original return line port on the timing gear cover.

Seeing how I have to bring my block back to the machine shop again, I'd like to do this modification.

You would have to run the pressure line from the pump through the filter and back to the start of the galley other wise what you have described would circumvent the oil going into the galley and lubricating the oil.

Are you maybe talking about going to the later spin on filter the CJ5's used in the 60's they are still a bypass filter but not the canister and use the same oil line routing as stock?

Gnome,
I converted Triple X to a full flow oil filter when I did the last re-build.  The real work was done inside the block where the passage was re-routed.  The machine shop did that.  If you are interested I can get some pics for you.  I've got 60 psi at the rear port (firewall) now.  One thing we also did was plug and re-drill the oil squirt hole at the front timing gear.  I believe the spec is .035 but my re-builder has a lot of experience with the Sprint car circuit as he builds engines for them.  His reccomendation was to go to .012 inch.  So we did, that pushed the oil pressure up a lot.

My recommendation is to remove the oil squirter and install a plug, my engine has ran fine for 25 years without one!

Hey Lee,
Will let my ignorance show here, but wouldn't plugging the hole starve the timing gear of oil?  Is there another way the bearing gets lube?

Will we see you in Sept. at FCT?
Tom

Excess oil from the front main is more than enough to lube the gears.....

I'm not going to FCT, see you next spring!

I agree with Lee on that one. Plugging the squirt hole is probably the cheapest and most effective way to make sure you have enough oil pressure at the front main bearing, and it won't hurt the engine.  In all honesty, the only reason I went to a full flow oil system is that I was really frustrated with engine re-builds.  I had to re-grind the crank 3 times in the first 1000 miles on that engine because of junk in the galleys.  First time it was a rear main seal that destructed after 5 minutes of run time, the second was some kind of locktite that hardened in the block and went through the galley and tore out the mains...Now me working for a engine filter company, well I just could not take that kind of abuse, so I got kind of twitchy and had the full flow system put in.

If you are not concerned about junk in the galley, I would really consider just removing the oil filter system completely, plugging the squirt hole, and running like that.  The oil pressure will be great, plenty of flow to the  bearings, and the oils in production today will easily withstand the heat from these old engines. And honestly I don't think any of us drive these trucks enough  in a season to wear out the oil.

Back at ya Lee, we need a ride.

The Jeep police will deduct 10 points for no original oil filter canister with decals that come off in the first cleaning!!!! You can always put a carpenter's nail in the oil line at the canister. This fully blocks the oil flow and no one will know! 8-)

I prefer the "Sans Oilfilter Look", less clutter and you well know my opinion on where the Jeep police can insert the Oilfilter canister W/decals!   ;D
