Winter Canvas Grill Cover

Hey guys, you may have seen this on the 3B page but I'm just getting around to posting it here. I recently made a canvas radiator cover for use in the wintertime. I have a 180 degree thermostat that works well in the summer, but with the heater running in winter I get varying heat output. This really solves the problem and my temps stay nice and steady either idling or driving. There are 8 three pound magnets sewn around the edge to hold it in place.

Very nice!� Does your temp gauge read considerably lower in the winter (without using this bra) than in the summer?� The reason I ask, is in very cold weather (well below zero) my car heater won't keep up, however, the temp. gauge reads what it always does - right on 190 degrees.� I have thought about doing this too - you see truckers cover their grills, but since my engine temp. seems to stay up, I don't know if it would help the heater performance.� Any thoughts?�

Well the issue I had was rapid temp swings. I would get to 180 then get moving and drop way off. Putting cardboard in the radiator works but it seemed like the temps would swing from way too hot to cold. For example at idle the temp would spike. With this cover the fan is still pulling air, just warm air from under the hood. I don't have any felt in place around the radiator. The heater works more consistently now with the cover in place.

That looks really professional.  What are three pound magnets?  Is three pounds what they will hold up?  I would not think that's what they weigh.  Where did you find the magnets?

You are correct, three pounds is what the supposedly hold. I had a couple ten pound ones but frankly they were impossible to deal with. I bought them at a surplus junk store in Minneapolis, but you could check out amazon or something similar.

If you have any dead PC computer harddrives around,� they have some strong magnets in them.� �Not sure of rating,� but I would guess at least 3 lb. . .� and they are free!  :)
