Here's the manny after a couple more days....the heat riser still won't move.


I've decided to take the engine to a machine shop. �Found a local guy with a lot of experience on old continental flat head and old Ford flat head engines. �After debating with myself about engine building costs, I finally accepted it needed more than just rings. �If it wasn't for cylinder 4 requiring so much honing due to that stuck piston it would still be in spec. �The other three are fine. �I could almost shake the piston in the cylinder. �Anywhoo, I got it dropped off today and it will probably end up .030 or .040 over. �This Jeep will probably be ugly when I'm "done" with it, but it will be perfectly functional.

Compare the pics to see the slack, and yes, I need to trim my fingernails sayeth someone who considers herself my girlfriend.




On a side note..........here's my little brother's Christmas gift from me....its a European mount Texas non-typical. � I'm not done with it yet, gotta mount it on a plaque then send it off to him. �He and my other brother bagged it last year and I've had it since, its almost done, just in time for Christmas.

Thanks, but I left it with the engine guy to grind the mating surfaces, they're pitted worse than the surface of the moon.  I won't get it all back until after the new year sometime.

I'm back in the Great State...checked on my engine which I'll pick up tomorrow.  Here's a couple of pics.  Turns out my old head had a crack running from the thermostat housing down to a spark plug.  I picked up a replacement head from "The Durtch" and dropped it off and I can pick up the engine tomorrow.  Also, something which I'm slightly distraught about - it had to be bored .80 over.  Oh well, but I'm happy I found someone with plenty of experience with flatheads.

Yes, he put the crankcase/EGR tube on the wrong side.



Then I spent most of the day trying to get a new seal kit in the D18. �But I'm having issues with the "IN/OUT" lever. �Its rusted fast to the pivot pin so the pivot pin twists when you actuate the lever and I can't get the pin out to remove the lever IOT replace the smaller shift rod seals. �The small lock bolt that is supposed to hold the pivot pin can't hold it. �So I'm soaking in in PB, then I'll try a hammer and cursing at it tomorrow to see if that helps. �Also, I need to make a tool similar to step D21 here: �http://www.cj-3a.com/Model%2018%20Rebuild.htm. �This is a great guide btw in case you have to go through a D18.



And, I'm getting ready to focus on the tub as soon as the engine/tranny/TC is back in...so finally the tub is completely free of guages etc. �Pulled the Harrison and found 10lbs of squirrel excrement and "dirt dobber" nests.

After closer inspection of the T90 I found some pitted gear teeth. �So I took the old 47' T90 and cleaned it up today and made one good transmission out of the two. �It took the better part of the day cleaning, reassembly and fiddling and cursing with those dang T90 needle bearings but its all good now. �I should have the TC back together quickly now and I'll be able to get the L head out of the back of my Comanche.

The main shaft also had a few deep pits like the reverse gear. �Looks more like a casting/machining issue than a wear issue to me. �Anyway, it has taken its rightful place in my growing Willys spare/junk parts corner of the yard.






I didn't get a good picture after the final cleaning, but the innards came out nice and shiny when I was done with it.

Almost finished the D18 today. �I still may replace the seals with better units, I'm not comfortable with the single lip seals that came in the kit. �Found that it is true that the built up crud on the bottom of old CJs do actually help seal leaks....see the rust holes in the D18 bottom cover? �Found those with a wire wheel, and it was holding gear oil before I took it apart! �Got those welded up now. �





Also, notice how somehow I've managed to ruin the intermediate shaft, don't ask me how, I have no idea. �I think the Jeep is mad at me and broke it through its magical powers when I wasn't looking. �I'll pick one up from Durtch on Friday, "no big whoop dog".



But I'd by lying if I didn't admit all these little set backs are piling up and getting on my nerves, making me want to buy a plane ticket to the Azores for the weekend. �But since I'm poor, I instead took the old MJ up to the store as the sun was setting to get some of my favorite tasty beverages to quell today's disappointing intermediate shaft event and hit on the super cute (and single - of course) young Cambodian lady that runs the place who surprisingly greeted me with, "So is that a Willys L Head in the back of your truck or are you happy to see me?" �Of course she had my beverages ready (special order for rural TX) and her greeting probably confirmed that I may have talked "Jeep" with her one too many times, (women aren't supposed to know what a Willys L Head is),,,, I guess there is such a thing as too much "Jeep", no wonder she won't go out with me. �Dang it.
