Trailer fender question?
« on: May 06, 2018, 11:15:06 AM »
I have an odd question, my M38 has wide tires that stick out from the body, which leads to the local county Mounties wanting to keep handing out tickets.

I dont want to do a permanent fender flare I was thinking something removable, but keeping with the lines of the Jeep.

So I was wondering do the fenders from a bantam trailer have the same radius and opening size as the rear fender opening of the M38/Cj3?

Any one got a trailer fender they can check the fit with? It would be much appreciated as the tire coverage is the last thing to deal with to make the Willys street leagal again.

The bantan t-3 type trailer with the round fender, not the flat style ones.  :D

Mike,
How wide are your tires?  The Bantam fenders are nearly 9" wide and have no fasteners on them - just holes where the "L" brackets line up with.  They've got a bit of weight on them so bouncing around may fatigue the tub sides - assuming you want to drill holes to fasten brackets to hold the fenders.

I assume since you didn't mention aftermarket jeep flares, they aren't wide enough. I've seen some that are 5" wide.

I've heard of some using trailer fenders from Tractor Supply Company for missing or mangled Bantam trailers.  You could consider cutting a pair of those to suit.

I need 5 extra of clearance, I havent been able to find any aftermarket fender wide enough that could fit.

My thought was to cut up and narrow a set of old bantam fenders and fab up some brackets so they are removable.

I am working on a bantam trailer and happen to have the fenders off. I will try to compare them and add a picture for you. I want to say the radius of the bantam is larger...but that is just my gut feeling.

The spare tire covers you see on vans might work. Get them cheap at the auto salvage yard.
People think I go out of my way to * them off.
Trust me, It's not out of my way at all.

Here are the pictures I was able to take by myself...not the best but give you an idea. It appears I was wrong and they do have similar radii.

That is awesome, thank you Brad.

Looks like the trailer fenders will fit inside the wheel arch, i can easily fab up some removable brackets so i can remove the fenders once i get to the trail head without johnny law raising a eyebrow.

Now all i have to do is to convince my wife i really need them.  ::)

being doing some research and the bantam fenders had a 15 3/4" radius (31 1/2" diameter) so some 32 or 31 x 9 trailer fenders should fit in there perfect and they are $30 each compared to the $130 each for the bantam fenders, off to princess auto (Canada's harbor freight) tomorrow.

ill just hide the fender in with the planter ill buy my wife, she will never notice.  :D

Well the 32 x 9 trailer fender dont work, not even close. I will have to take them back and order up some bantam trailer fenders from Willys acres.
