hey guys,  im taking a poll to see what kind of insurance the majority of old willys owers have.  i will be plateing my '51 this spring and was wondering if i should put full coverage on it or just liability. i have sank alot of money in it since i started this project 3 years ago.

Hi Terry - I have full coverage through Hagerty on my '51 3A. No appraisal needed and you tell them the value. I have antique plates.

My M38 is a junker so I carry liability only and it's part of my regular auto policy through Metlife. I have antique plates on that as well.

I just have liability on mine....but maybe I should re-think that....

I did a Hagerty online quote and got $163 a year.......I think I'm paying about $65 a year now for just the liability....

Keep in mind in Most states until the vehicle is registered and insured for road use there is no coverage on it. Your home owners policy rarely if ever will cover a vehicle in restoration. SO if your house burns down you better have insurance on the project or your screwed.

Hagarty and a few others offer project type insurance at a much reduced rate.

I plan on using the 1960's era plates my Willys had when dad got it on the road in about 63-64 and licensing it as a regular vehicle. I also plan on looking at Hagarty or one of the other classic car insurance companies to cover it as I want full coverage and a value close to what it would cost to fix it after just about any wreck I could live through.

I have antique vehicle insurance  through state farm. They dont ask many queations and they will insure just about anything. I had a 1986 seagrave 100' ladder truck, a 1969 GMC 4500 and now my 3a. All these vehicles cost me $40 ever 6 months. I looked at Hagerty in the past, but it seems like they only insure restored classics. They want it inside, locked, restrictions on mileage. . . With state farm, I dont get any of that.

Ryan, I have had a few clients with claims through Hagerty on their classics.  All have said the company was excellent to deal with and paid promptly.  One of the big differences with Hagerty is their "Guarenteed Value" of the vehicles on the policy.  Basically, the company does their valuation of the vehicle BEFORE a claim is made (hence all the questions and photos of the vehicles when you write the policy) and when you both agree on the value, that's it.  If you have a "total loss" of the vehicle you are paid the "Guarenteed Value" of the vehicle minus the deductible.  The term "total loss" will be a little different from state to state but usually means the cost to repair the vehicle is more than 60-80% of the vehicle value.  Most of the normal insurance companies will determine the value of the vehicle at the time of the loss, AFTER the claim has happened.  The value on their policy when it is written will be limit, not a guaranteed value.

The only complaint I have ever heard regarding Hagerty was on a small partial loss on a '68 Camaro.  Someone had backed in to the Camaro's front fender and caused a small dent.  When the owner took the car for an estimate, the estimate came back around $12,000 because the shop owner wanted to paint the entire car and didn't want to mess with matching the fender paint.  The shop owner convinced the vehicle owner of the "special paint" needed on old cars would never match without painting the entire vehicle.  Needless to say, Hagerty did not want to paint the entire vehicle for a $1,100 dent.  The situation went on for a month or so until the vehicle owner went and got THREE other estimates from different shops before he was convinced the "special paint" could be matched...

I unwittingly sent Hagerty pics of my 3A with my Willys MB-T trailer attached and they tried to drop me as they thought I was using it for "work" purposes and hauling stuff. It took 20 minutes on the phone followed by a signed statement that the trailer was simply a "period correct accessory" to convince them to keep me on.

I have Auto -Owners for my home and vehicles.  Like Haggerty's, they too have the "agreed value" provisions.  I have my 3A insured for $20k.  Full coverage.  $90 every 6 mos.

Holy Crap Bob!  That truck just became my favorite color combo for a Willys truck!!  When I get around to working on my '47 truck, that color combo is top on the list.
Is that an original combo?

Thanks guys. The color combination is an original type but the exact paint formulas are more modern colors. I just looked through the paint catalog for something similar. White and Gray
