dana 25 axle hub assembly

Hi gang, the hubs on my dana 25 front axle don't look anything like the shop drawings I see. My hub flange is in front of the drum with the studs poking through from the back of the drum. I read an article that taking off the flange nuts was not necessary for brake pad change, with this setup I had to remove nuts and outer bearing. Is this properly set up?

Original brakes on a Willys with the Dana 25 have the hubs on the outside of the drum and do require the removal of the entire drum/hub assembly to replace the shoes.


I believe the M38 was the first Willys Jeep to have the hub on the inside of the drum.� Perhaps the article you are reading is about the M38 or later Jeeps.

Hawk, is that the same for the rear drums as well, I've been looking through the Universal Jeep service manual and find pictures for the rear axle D41 /44 with both arrangements, hub outside the drum and hub inside the drum.

It gets more confusing as on my jeep I have one hub outside the drum and one inside the drum on the rear axle.  I understand why, the side which has the hub out side the drum has a drum with an outer flange 1/4 inch narrower than the other drum, thus if the hub is inside the drum the drum would be too far out from the backing plate thus not in contact with the brake pad across its entire width.

 So at the end of the day the question is, what is the proper flange width for the rear drum on the D41/44?  Or does it not matter as long as they are the same?
