Pulling D18 Transfercase

Folks, I am pulling my transfercase and I am not having any luck. The tub is still on, and I have done:

1) Removed the cover on the Tcase and the gear.
2) Removed all 5 bolts holding the tcase to the transmission
3) Losen the crossmember

Do I need to remove the shifters? and if so, can this be done with the body on it? I have it separated, but I can't get it to drop? Thanks.

I don't know how many bolts there are total, but it seems to me there is one that comes in from the front, not far from where the front drive shaft yoke is........

Hi I have recently dropped my case with the gearbox. I was able to remove the shifters from the top with little difficulty. After loosening the lock bolt I was able to use a short piece of bent wire to push the pin from one end far enough for the shifters to be freed away. You can't get it all the way out whilst in situ but onc :)e it is down you can remove it if required.

I am trying to get the pin out, but it is being stubborn. I have some penetrating oil on it now. I am leaving the trans in, but I am being to wonder if I should just drop everything.

It looks apparent that the shifter's must be removed to just get the transfer case out.

You may have already read this but be sure to follow step D.8 or the transmission output shaft will shift and the main drive roller bearings will drop into the bottom of the transmission case

You will need to remove the shift levers.� Support the transmission with a jack, then remove the crossmember bolts from the frame.� Lower the jack/transmission as much as� you can.� Slide the pin out as far as possible.� Even if you can't remove it entirely, you will be able to slide it far enough to the passenger side to slip the first shift rod off...followed by the second shift rod.� Once the rods are off, the TC will slide right off.

Edit: I will double down on Randy's recommendation.� Tie off the transmission gears...or you will be dropping the transmission whether you want to or not.

Good call guys. I tied off the gears. I forgot about the needle bearings in the main shaft. I finally got the shifter handles out, and dropped the transmission cross member.  Made a big difference. Now I just got to get mean and pop it off. thanks for all your help guys.

Well my wiring didn't work. When I pulled really hard on TCASE,  wire didn't hold and the shaft separated. Guess I am doing the tranny now.  >:(

That's a bummer......did all the rollers fall out? I don't remember how many are in there, but it's a snug fit.....the problem is you gotta get all the loose rollers out of the bottom of the case...

The transmission is easier to rebuild than the transfer case in my opinion.

On the bright side it's a perfect opportunity to replace the clutch disc and the pilot bearing...

Yes. When the shaft popped,  I could see a couple of little needle bearing's in the bottom of the case.

Oh well, I guess if I am going through tcase, might as well do the trans. ...... then I know every thing is good.

That's right, It's not bad, kinda fun really.

Be sure to read through the rebuild tech pages.


And Doug h did a nice writeup with pictures that is probably on the 3b forum. I'll look for it...

Thanks for the information.   I picked up a T20 and need to drop my T18.  Problem is the thing weighs ALOT.  So I need to plan around my husband's schedule.  Good to know about the bolt number, I thought they were only 4.  I like to think my transmission is good so I will make an effort to not drop it too.  Appreciate your experience.

My mistake was I let the transmission rear bearing come with the transfercase. It pulled too much on the wires and broke them. That would be my biggest advice.
