Won't shift

Alright, got the trans and transfer case back in after replacing the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. Everything went together fine, adjusted clutch within spec. now the trans won't make the wheels go round. I can shift gears but even with the rear wheels off the ground nothing happens. I can see the pressure plate spinning, the disk is spinning, in gear (reverse or first) but no power to the rear wheels. I can engage the transfer case and get power to the front but nothing to the rear. Any Ideas out there? I am totally stumped.

This may be an obvious suggestion and you probably have tried this but make sure the hi-range/low-range lever(the short one) is either fully forward or fully aft, if in the middle there will be no power to the wheels.....the short lever is sometimes difficult to shift.....

This is what popped into my head too.  What's throwing me is he is getting power to the front axle, but not the rear.  If true, I almost think the rear axle is broken.

Does the rear drive shaft spin while it's up on jack stands?

No,  tried it with the rear tires off the ground. I can turn the tires by hand if not in gear. But if in gear I can't turn by hand. I have to check on the transfer case engaged. I thought you only engaged TC if using 4x4. So to drive in 2 wheel drive I have to have the TC lever in H or L? But the front wheel lever in N?

For rear wheel drive�on the TC Levers

-The closest TC lever to the driver needs to be in the �OUT� position�which is pushed toward the dash board.

-The farthest lever from the driver needs to be pulled to the �HIGH� position, which is pulled toward the seats.  If this lever is only pulled half way toward the seats, it is in the �neutral� position�and no power will be supplied to either axle.

That part about the front wheels turning stumped me also....maybe just enough drag in there to make them turn a bit.

Also, there is supposed to be a "lockout" installed between the transfer case selector rods within the case that prevents Lo range from being selected while in 2WD...you can't see the lockout unless you disassemble the whole transfer case.

Mine sometime is tough to get into HI range..fiddle with it a little, try it both with the engine running and with the engine off...

otherwise there is a slider inside the T-case that connects the front output shaft to the rear, but I think if it were buggered up that would only prevent you from engaging the front axle..

Let us know what you learn..

Did you have either the Transfer case or the transmission apart?

There is a slight chance that one of the shift forks is not engaged to it's respective slider.....

or maybe the shift lever is not engaging the shift shaft on the TC?

Seems to me there is a notch on each of the TC shift shafts that the end of the shift levers slip into....

Did not take apart either, I did however take the shift tower off the trans. but I pretty sure I got it back on right since I could shift through the gears while driving it w/front wheel drive only. I really think I didn't have the TC engaged correctly. I will find out tomorrow when I get time to work on it. I'll let everyone tomorrow. thanks all.

I am totally mystified at your ability to drive with the front axle engaged and no power to the rear wheels.

The front axle drives off of the shaft that drives the rear axle using a thing they call an output clutch gear, so the rear axle output shaft must be turning....

Did the jeep drive normally before you replaced the clutch etc?

Looong shot.....are there locking hubs on the rear wheel hubs, like the ones you frequently see on the front?

OK, I guess the HI/LOW lever was not fully engaged. I pulled it all the way baack with the clutch pushed in, the TC lever all the way forward and LO and behold, it works. I always thought both of the TC levers had to be disengaged and that they were for the front wheel drive only. Well you learn something new everyday and you can teach an old dog new tricks. Again, thanks all, I'm so glad you'll are out there for us novices. :D

Shake it off Philip.  This catches a lot of newer Willys guys.  I've had a couple of these Willys for quite some years now.  After a few months of not driving them, I still have to cheat and look at the dash plate to refresh my memory.  [smiley=wink.gif]

Sometimes you just can't see the forest for the trees....

When I put the Model A back together the clutch didn't work...pedal just went bang! to the floor...

oh boy, direct to panic mode and thinking about pulling everything again...

Then after about 15 minutes I realized that all I needed to do was adjust the clutch pedal throw......

Simple solutions are great, but sometimes they are hard to see!
