6v voltage regulator

ok so where do you all get a new voltage regulator as ive called all my local stores and napa seems to be the only 1 to have it at 75 bucks and walcks has theres for 125 which are both a good chunk of money since my dad told me that they were cheap back in the day and also will any 6v regulator work because ive seen square ones and rectangle ones etc

I took a chance and bought a couple off ebay......for both the CJ-3a and the CJ-5....both work fine.

Be sure of your part number and buy from reputable sellers....

The repair manual has part numbers listed on the last few pages of the electrical section.

Well, I wouldn't use the 12 volt one....

That first one is a replacement for the VBO 4601 which is listed in the manual...

This is what I'm using.....

Check the number on your generator as different generators used different regulators...

Good luck on the regulator. You might wait a little and find a better match...

Just one more idea...

Do you still have your old regulator?

There are contact points inside the regulator that open and close as the regulator is operating. Similar to the contact points in the distributor, but different looking.

Sometime these points can corrode and the regulator will stop working.

You can clean the points with a good 400 grit or so wet-or-dry sandpaper, then clean/ blow the dust off.....

You might get lucky.....

Does it work?

If you can check the battery voltage across the battery terminals, engine off, it should be around 6 volts. With it running-you may have to set it at a fast idle- it will be higher, around 6.8 volts. That will tell you it's charging.

i havnt been able to test it yet as im still trying to get it started because it cranks slowly and my battery is being drained fast because of the slow cranking

Well, don't go changing parts until you can test everything.

The regulator will do nothing until the engine is running and the generator is working.

Clean your battery cables where they connect both to the battery posts and where they connect to the chassis ground and to the starter. "Clean Bright and Tight!" for good electrical connections

 It's not going to spin over like a modern car.

Did you pressure wash the engine compartment? You may have moisture in the distributor. Take the cap off and dry it thoroughly, you can use compressed air to gently blow it dry or just wipe it out and let it air dry...and clean the points while you are in there..just a little sandpaper between the contact surfaces and scuff it back and forth a few times..

i did use zep industrial purple degreaser and a big shot pressure hose adapter to clean and its gonna need more to finish it lol but i did let everything dry and after i went in there and cleaned and sanded parts and still wont kick over but i ordered new parts from walcks anyways so that way i can rule everything out and start fresh

so i took off the regulator today and took the cover off and this thing is mint except for the exposed bottom and im sure this part is not defunct and would function perfectly

Make sure the wire on that two resistors on the bottom is in good shape and not broken.  Check the continuity.
