Milky Oil in the Pan

Got the CJ3A fired up the other day and it sounds great and runs very smooth.  Here's the problem, terribly milky oil in the pan and it was pouring out the front of the motor near the timing cover.  There is no milk in the water jacket on the motor its all in the pan.  Weird or normal?  Any ideas on where the water infiltration would be coming from?

Not normal.� Quick question: can you smell antifreeze in the oil?� If not, then somehow water got in there ( it doesn�t take much to turn it milky).  If you can, most likely a head gasket problem, or crack somewhere.�

Stony, I'm hoping its just a head gasket but are there other common places L134 blocks crack that I should be aware of when I start ripping into this motor?  Also is it weird that the water jacket didn't have oil in it, but only the oil pan had water in it?

A non-functioning Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system could also cause this (I had it - but I observed the "milk" in the oil filler tube.  Fixed the lines (and dipstick gasket) and added a valve and it went away.  Since the engine is opened up, it may be more difficult to pin-point why.

Since oil would float, I would have been looking into the radiator before draining. 

Now that you're into a tear-down, hopefully you can rule out block damage.

You didn't mention whether this oil is fresh/new?  Or old?

I didn't see anything in the radiator but the water pump had failed  also, so I'm not sure I would have been able to tell.

Oil isn't fresh.  Just got the jeep running and noticed this.  So I immediately started looking for causes.  Noticed water pump was leaking.  Pulled it, gaskets around timing cover looked like they were failing, pulled it and viola milk pours out!

Russ mentions the PCV system.  Positive Crankcase Ventilation.  If the PVC valve or any part of the system is clogged, or the oil has been sitting stagnant for quite some time, condensation will build up in the areas that contains the oil.  From my experience, this is what is happening to your oil.  The PCV system allows the condensates to escape by letting them circulate and move into the intake manifold.  They are slowly burned off in the combustion chambers and removed through the exhaust system.  You may have a crack.  You might not.  I would drain the oil, pull the pan, clean it thoroughly before putting it back on, then replace the oil and filter if so equipped.  Run the engine for quite a while (30-40 minutes) Get it good and hot.  Run it around the neighborhood. Have some fun.  Now drain the oil again and put in fresh.  Run the engine until hot again.  Now check the oil.  If not milky after both oil changes, you're probably in good shape.
  I know this seems like a waste of good oil, but tearing the engine down could be far more of a waste (of time) just to find you just needed to change out the old nasty oil.
