Oil Line Problems
« on: September 30, 2018, 12:02:08 PM »
Ugh....why is it the simple tasks seem to give you the most trouble !!.
I have a very badly damaged oil hose on the engine and after doing my research, which appeared to establish that the same hoses were used throughout the Jeeps evolution, I got a replacement set.
As mentioned before, buying stuff for CJ3A specifically is difficult in the UK but there are plenty of suppliers for the wartime models. If I need a part that is common to all the earlier Jeeps then I go to one of those suppliers.

I removed the long hose from the oil filter to the bottom of the engine..... simple job yes ?, to discover that the original has two different threads on the ends.

The oil filter end has what appears to be an 1/8 NPT (27 TPI) but the engine end has a larger thread which I cannot identify.

It has 24 threads per inch and appears to be about a 7/16" but I can't be sure.
It is the same thread that all the other hoses have so must be quite common.

Does anyone know what that thread size is (that fits into the block) so I can buy or make an adapter ?

Thanks  ::)

My 1950 CJ3A has 1/8 pipe on the block and filter. Someone may have re-tapped your block.
People think I go out of my way to * them off.
Trust me, It's not out of my way at all.

Thanks mtnman I will have to do some research.
The hoses I was supplied have the same thread on both ends (which you suggest is a 1/8 pipe) but the original has a smaller thread on the filter end...why I don't know.

It's all fixable but more work that should be absolutely necessary.

Cheers

This evening I saw an old oil line laying in my shop. You need a fitting. The canister is 1/8 pipe and the block is 1/8 pipe but the end of the oil line is inverted flare. You need the fitting to adapt, it's a common part.

Hi, I have the fitting into the block no probs.
The line fits that ok but the other end, using the same thread ,does not fit the Oil Filter.
The original line that I took off definitely has two different threads. I will grab a photo and upload it so everyone can have a laugh. !

Hi everyone, so hopefully there are two photos showing you the ends of the long oil feed pipe on my CJ3A. Although it is not immediately apparent they are different.
The larger one is common to the other lines and goes into the block.
The smaller one goes into the oil filter.
My tap and die set has identified the smaller as a 1/8 NPT 27t.
Does anyone know what the larger one is as i need to make or buy an adapter.
Cheers

.433, the one on the right is a 1/4" inverted flare like a brake line. You need this fitting. it adapts the inverted flare to national pipe.

Thanks for taking the effort to reply. Are you able to tell me exactly what thread the larger one is ....1/4 ?. I basically need to make an adaptor to make this thread fit the  smaller 1/8 pipe used in the filter.

The thread on the inverted flare does not seal.  The flared pipe is what seals just like brake lines. The pipe size is 1/4", that fitting cost about a dollar at any auto parts store.
