Are old crankshafts worth saving
« on: March 18, 2013, 05:04:50 PM »
I have a engine from my parts jeep sitting here I had saved the head but most other parts of the engine are rusty junk is any of the internals worth saving crank, cam, oil pump or just haul it to the scrapper the block has a three inch long horizontal crack under the distributor. I pulled the TC it had ice in it but I believe its salvageable trans had ice in it so Im going to try to save the housing the clutch disk is rusted to the input shaft so I have not been able to seperate trans from engine yet.

I'd save it. Blocks can be repaired. Put it up for sale with a price tag of 50 bucks or so. Someone will buy it.

My general response to any questions like this is, "Never throw anything away."
 :)
Until you are COMPLETELY done with any work you'll ever do on your Jeep, you don't know what parts you might need.
If you have storage space, store it until you are DONE.
Then put it up for sale. If the price is right, you can sell anything.
Sometimes the right price is free.  :)

The only limitation on moving parts is shipping. It can be a deal killer on things like a frame or an engine. But there are ways around that too. That's where the forums come into play. Sometimes a guy is making a run that will help connect a seller and buyer. Many of us are willing to transport parts when we're going "there" for another reason.

Don't be afraid to post about any parts you have even if you thing they're really junk. One man's junk is another man's treasure.

If the crank can be reground, keep it.  Walck's has bearings up to 0.080 oversize so some pretty big dings and wear can still be ground out.  Same for the rods.  Things like the cam and lifters can also be reused if not pitted up or wore out-just make sure to keep the lifters matched with the cam lobes.

I probably wouldn't keep the block or pistons.  There are still enough decent blocks around that, at least in my opinion, it is not worth trying to get it welded up.  I am not going to be using used pistons in a rebuild either, but that is perhaps more my own opinion.  I am sure there are a lot of used pistons that would still be perfectly useable.
