Shock Absorbers

Need to replace the shocks on my Jeep. Any tips on buying or installation? Thanks in advance!

Assuming you have the standard suspension system then go with Monroe #32207.

We got ours from Walcks, Easter sale. BUT be ready! those old cotter keys dont come out without a fight! I had to drill out 3 and still have one shock to go.

I just have the pilot holes drilled and will need to put shocks, washer on and then see what i need to do. good luck!

A couple of guys (Tim?) have made special tools to compress the shock rubbers onto the perch and still allow the cotter key to be inserted....

I got mine on without the tool but it was a battle....

Here is a picture of the original style tool.....

Some use pvc or conduit and a big C-clamp...

I have been trying to find a pic of my homemade "tool" since this thread began and can't seem to locate it. I've never had these go on without a fight.

As Randy described I just used a small length if 1" metal conduit with notches cut on either side and a 6 or 8" C-clamp to compress it over the rubber mount so I could feed the cotter pin through the hole.

Yes the Monroe shocks are OEM and fit the unmodified / standard jeep perfectly.
The Monroe 32207 is the current gas charged model (dark blue)
The Monroe 59017 was the next previous gas charged model (yellow)
The Monroe 1004 was previous to the 59017.
It is a lighter shade of blue and is not gas charged like the later models.

Technically the 1004 is most correct design because its not gas charged.
But they all look the same if painted semi gloss black. Ha Ha !

My shocks mostly all fit on fine, but on one I did have to just shave about 1/8- inch off of the outer rubber.  Pretty simple deal.

The Monroe 37112 is an OE Spectrum shock - their top of the line, and when I called Monroe they said it crossed to the cheaper blue and yellow ones.  The travel lengths are slightly different, but for as much as my jeep compresses the springs, I would buy them next time.  I think the blue ones are not very good.  My last set of them only lasted about 4 years.  Monroe has a good spec. table on their website:   http://www.monroe.com/downloads/install-instructions-guides/MonroeMountingLengthSpecifications.pdf
