Rear Brake Lines
« on: November 21, 2015, 11:42:56 AM »
I am trying to figure out the attachment of the rear brake line that goes across the rear axle.  It looks like there should be a bolt hole in the top of the differential but I cannot find one.

The preformed brake lines did not come with clips.  I would think that it should have a clip that goes behind a cover bolt (like the front line) and it looks like it should have three bands to secure the line to the axle.

Can someone post a picture of the clips or straps or what ever is correct.

I was missing my bracket too.  It's a pretty easy bracket to make if you have a little L-angle laying around.  Not perfect, but it works...

Tim .... What is the clamp around the axle? Is it correct? Where did you get it?

I fabricated a simple bracket for the brass fitting. I just need the clamps.

I have these on my 3A. Not sure if they are original but I believe they are. I've found them on other Willys too.

Early CJ-3As had clamps, like Tim's photo. Later CJ-3As used the clips like Ryan's photo.

Thanks Bob. I didn't know about the change. The clips in Ryan's photos look pretty slick.

Jim, the clamps shown in my photo were included with the brake line kit I purchased from Walcks. This kit is for the CJ2A and early CJ3A.

Your photo shows a Dana 41 rear axle which is consistent with early 3As.

Tim ... I just figured out that the rear end was a Dana 41 when the rear cover gasket did not fit.

It does have tapered axles like the Dana 44.  I wonder if a prior owner swapped the axles for some reason.

Based on your SN, your Willys was likely made in March or April 1950.  The Dana 41 is correct for this time frame.  The Dana 44 starts showing up on the 3A in late 1950.
