Windshield Install - Beyond frustrated

Trying to install a new windshield on the CJ3A and not getting anywhere here. I have done a lot of research trying to find someplace that had a good installation guide, but can't seem to find one on any forum or YouTube. All I can find are bits of pieces of installations. I just cracked the windshield and ripped the seal trying to install it, which just cost me $260, now I have to order a new one.

I tried to wrap the seal around the glass, but could not keep the seal on the glass and the seal around the corners would bulge out. Tried putting the seal around the inside of the frame then putting the glass in, but the glass just kept slipping out.

One guide that I did find showed the seal round the glass, but the seal did not bulge around the corners. Does someone make a one piece seal that fits around the glass instead of the one that you have to cut to fit?

Cracking the glass is no fun. I've done it too. It was an expensive lesson. Now I go to a small� auto glass shop for that job. He orders the glass too.

Would love to take it to the local glass place, but don't think they will touch it. The pinch seam isn't the greatest on it. Thats why I am trying to do it myself and  looking for advice on how to keep the seal on the window while trying to pull it around the pinch seam.

if your local guy is a Franchise then he won't do the job as they are geared towards new cars. If he's an independent he'll snap that glass in faster than you can say "fix it". You'll be surprised how easy he makes it look. Last year I had a windshield for a 1964 Ford Van replaced. The glass guy bought all the parts(glass and rubber). It cost me $275 for the job. That's $150 for the glass, $65 for the rubber and $60 labor. Worth every penny.

I tried to follow that, without any luck. In those instructions the seal looks like it is formed to the glass and stays on. The one you get from Walcks will not do that. Will have to find a way to secure it to the glass

The seal looks like it's formed to the glass because it's held in place with twine or wire around the edge, once you have the glass in place pull the twine out and use a small slotted screw driver and go around and tuck the seal edges around the window frame. When you put the centre strip in the middle of the seal it expands it to seat around both the glass and frame. You need something to expand the slot, I used a 1/4" socket extension, and something to push the strip down into the slot, I used a wooden spoon handle. You need to cut both the seal and centre strip to length, then fill the gap with lack silicone or similar sealant.

Stay away from metal tools if possible. Here is a cheap tool for the job.

Well I just got my new windshield glass and seal today in the mail. Looked it over and the seal that came with the new glass is not the same as the one they sent me before. I used the new seal in in 20 minutes the new glass was in without any hassle. Not sure if they sent me the wrong seal before or the new one is wrong, but regardless it worked.
