2A, Back in the Day
« on: September 10, 2013, 02:42:18 PM »
I paid a visit to the Bangor, ME Historical Society this summer to search through their photo archives. I knew they had a vast collection of old tax cards and tax cards typically have a photo of the property attached to it. I had located the physical address of a former Willys dealership and had hoped to luck out and find a picture of it. I spent nearly two hours rummaging through the endless archives of tax cards and random negatives but no trace of the Willys Dealership. I did, however, find a pic dated 1947 that shows a seemingly new 2A full of Shriners. Not as good as an entire dealership but a neat photo nonetheless. I have posted the photo here with the permission of The Bangor Museum and History Centers Bangor Daily News Negative Collection.

Wow! I love the trailer wood wheels.
And the passenger guy....he is thinking "Oh no...I'm leaking like the jeep.."

I left it that big on purpose. It is actually sized down considerably from my original copy. I posted the pic over on the 2A page as well and the max size over there is much smaller. Just doesn't look as good.

That photo is a great find.  Fun to see what an original paint job looked like.  Any idea what color it is?  Not too many to choose from in those days.  Looks like the wheels are gloss black with the famous pin stripe.  I didn't know black was an option for wheels.  Also, I thought all CJ-2As came with 4 hood hold-down latches.
Thanks for the look back in time. I'd love to have old old "flat fender" that new with all original factory parts.

I've been wondering the same thing. From what I can gather, the only light colored option would have been Michigan Yellow. Everything else was pretty dark, including the "Picket Gray". I'm curious if those are be "Normandy Blue" wheels? That would make a pretty stunning combo.

Can't tell too much but is that a clamp for a column shift? If it is there was a light color with them that was Harvest Tan and the wheels were Sunset Red which was a bright Pumpkin Orange. Quite  few jeeps had the Princeton Black wheels but body colors were dark.

Pretty sure column shifts stopped way before they went to the newer non bullet parking lights.
As far as a color goes, those wheels are either black or red, my vote is for black. What color would have had those wheels in 47?

Here's an excerpt from the 2A page history section.

The next big change was paint colors. Up until serial number 38221, the CJ-2A only came in two colors--Pasture Green and Harvest Tan. The Pasture Green 2As had Autumn Yellow wheels (a bright yellow) with a Pasture Green pin stripe. The Harvest Tan 2As used Sunset Red wheels (not a red but a bright pumpkin orange) with an Americar Black pin stripe. The pin stripe was inch wide and was just past the roll of the center part of the wheel. (Note: the paint color that is underline is Willys official name for the color)

In 1946 after serial number 38221 there were four more body colors added. Princeton Black (sometimes mentioned as Americar Black) Normandy Blue (a real dark navy blue), Michigan Yellow (a medium yellow) and Harvard Red (a bright red). The color wheels these 2As used should be of interest as a black or white painted wheel is not correct. The color scheme Willys used was:

Princeton Black. This is such a rare color that not much is known about its wheel color. Period color ads shows wheels that are Harvard Red or Sunset Red both with an Americar Black stripe

Normandy Blue 2As came with 2 different wheel colors---Autumn Yellow with a Normandy Blue or American Black stripe and Sunset Red with a Normandy Blue or Americar Black stripe.

Michigan Yellow 2As came with 3 different wheel colors. Pasture Green with a Michigan Yellow stripe, Americar Black with a Wake Ivory stripe and Sunset
Red with an Americar Black stripe.

Harvard Red 2As came with 2 different wheel colors, Autumn Yellow with a Harvard Red stripe and Americar Black with a Wake Ivory stripe.

In 1947 Harvard Red was dropped and Picket Gray (a dark gray) and Luzon Red (a plum colored maroon-ish red) were added. The color wheels these 2As
 used were:

Picket Gray 2As came with Harvard Red wheels with an Americar Black stripe.

Luzon Red 2As came with Universal Beige wheels with a Luzon Red stripe.

In 1948 Potomac Gray (a light gray) was added and it used 2 different wheel colors. They were Harvard Red with an American Black stripe and American Black with a Wake Ivory stripe.

In 1949 Picket Gray, Normandy Blue and Michigan Yellow were dropped and Emerald Green (a dark green) was added. No definite wheel color has been established for this CJ-2A color.

Because the stripe appears to be lighter than the wheel, I believe we are looking at black wheels with an ivory stripe.
I think the jeep is either Michigan yellow or Potomac Grey...Maybe.....

I still vote Michigan yellow and now likely black wheels with the white stripe, assuming the detailed info above is correct (thanks F Bill!). When I found the negative it was labeled "August 1947". The '48 model year probably wasn't out yet which would rule out Potomac Gray, right?

Nobody mentioned the poor fellow in the passenger seat.  Looks like he's all tangled up in the string that would be pulled to ring the bell. ;D   Gotta love those Shriners!!

Great photo.  Thanks for digging it up.

Yup, more implements to add to the already lengthy list of confirmed Willys attachments :

" 'Shriner Bell w/frame Mount' - comes with sufficient pull string that either rider on the approved 'Creepy Wooden Wheeled Medieval Wagon' can operate it if the Willys passenger is deemed unqualified to do so." ;D
