this little 1950 cj-3a is for sale in my area. I was thinking about going and taking a look at it. it's got a Buick V6, but other than that, it's pretty much stock. (other than the seats) he's asking $4500.

A V-6 might be great fun.....a little more power never hurts, and you can sort of justify it by saying that the factory eventually added the V-6 to the CJ-5's....

If it's well done I'd be tempted....it looks good in the pictures!

does it have an overdrive?

thanks for the input.  I guess you're right about the V6.  apparently, the guy is out of town until April, so i'll have to wait until then to go look at it.  unfortunately, no over-drive.  I could add one easy enough.  of course it would mean I would have to for over nearly a grand for a new one. :'(

I have a v6 in the Jalopy. It is nice power wise, but nothing beats banging around with a 4 cylinder!

Any V6 equipped CJ5 I ever drove didn't need an overdrive, at least not like the 4-cyl does

I'd be tempted to snap that one up, its a good looking little truck.

I've never driven one with the V6 swap, so I appreciate all of the info, guys.  if it looks as good in person, I will probably buy it.  I will keep you guys posted when April rolls around.

I spoke to the guy today via text message, and I told him that I would like to take a look at it.  he said that he's had some inquiries, but I was the first to say that I wanted to look at it.  so, when he gets back in town, I will be first in line.  that's always good.

The CJ-5 didin't need overdrive as it had much higher axles ratios.
That 3A most likelly has 5.38 axles.
An early 5 would have 4.27. By the time they were putting a V-6 in them they were between 4:1 and 3:1
If it has original axles with the V-6 then an overdrive would be very usefull.
But
It will enable you to go faster than the steering and brakes were designed for.
If the axles have been upgraded to match with the V-6, then the same applies - you can outrun the steering and brakes.
