So I've pretty much lost the last 3 days to the Scottsdale auction. It's like a vortex that keeps sucking me in >:(. All I can say is there are a lot of people with a lot of money with a lot of beautiful cars that must never see the road. Thank God our beloved Willys Jeeps haven't become popular amongst this crowd or I wouldn't be able to own one of these pieces of Americana!

Had some business to attend to in Scottsdale Fri. and got caught up in the Barret-Jackson "event" traffic, and parking area exit.  Wish I could have stayed, but could'nt afford parking, let alone a purchase. JamesR

Geezzz could I build a nice Willys with 4.2 million.  Come to think of it, 325k might be enough also.  But then, in either case, it would still get the p-wadding wheeled out of it.

Oh well.  Dream on.

WARNING, RANT TO FOLLOW!

Are you serious? I've never seen a Jeep go for such money.  Are you talking about Willys Wagons or Jeep Wagoneers.  I've been watching prices for the last few years and it seems that the most valued, or most expensive Jeeps seem to be mid 80s-early 90s fully restored FSJ Wagoneers, they usually go for 25-35K.  There's still a market for yuppies who couldn't afford them back then who want them now.

...and I've watched beautifully restored Jeepsters go for under 10K, that's pennies.  No wonder JP magazine just had an article (not trying to slam them, cause I like the mag),,,,but they had an article named "A TJ saving Jeepster".  Its on page 20 of the Mar 2013 issue.  Now just when does slicing up a rare Jeepster warrant accolades vs hacking up a much more readily available TJ?  I could never do that.  What a shame.

I think its just the nature of the beast for us Jeepers that is simply a matter of reality, its that rarity doesn't always equate to more value.  Hey, look at Scramblers, they made about 27K of them and they're terribly overvalued, however, they only made 14K 98' 5.9L Grand Cherokees....and I've bought 4x 5.9 ZJs for the price that one decent CJ8 would go for.

Don't even get me started on the undervalued FCs.

Sorry,,,this is one of my short nerves....every time I see a Chevelle with a crate motor and a 10K paint job fetch $80K plus I just want to eat my own vomit.  I used to be a muscle car guy, but all the clubs were full of narcissistic, better than thou car owners.  I don't miss the muscle car world at all and I even used to be a devoted Mustang guy, I had a couple of 67's, a 68', a 65' A code fastback, and now I laugh at the prices they bring.  Its just stupid money compared to the number they made...but I guess if there's a market then good for them.  I hope they continue to rip each other off for years to come.  Meanwhile, I'll keep collecting real rare automotive metal in the form of something that's actually useful.....they're called "Jeeps".

I'll take a WWII MB over a Boss 429 or Camaro SS any day.  The MB can go places no muscle car could ever dream of.   And if there's a question of speed,,,I'd go pinks right now with my 5.9 ZJ against darn near any one of those overpriced heavy gluttonous muscle cars that are bringing silly money at those auctions.

From Motor Trend: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/112_9801_battle_of_the_suv/viewall.html

"As the stoplight flashes to green at a late-night intersection circa 1969, a herd of leaded-fuel-slurping ponycars is about to experience the might of muscle-bound luxo/utes. Emerging from our fantasy time machine onto Woodward Ave., the bravado-emanating Grand Cherokee could casually choose its prey. Sidling up next to a '68 Camaro SS 396 at a stoplight, it would be hard to convince the other driver that you are serious about racing. After all, how fast could a truck really be? As the 325-horsepower Camaro spins its 14-inch wheels fruitlessly, the Grand Cherokee is well on its way to reaching 60 mph a full second ahead of the 7.8-second big-block GM ponycar. Attracting the attention of other ponycars, a '65 Shelby GT-350, '67 Barracuda 340, '68 Pontiac Firebird 400, and '69 Mustang Mach 1 bravely take on the high-tech challenger, only to be sent whinnying back to their garages. It would take an extraordinary car indeed to tromp the Grand Cherokee-a '70 Hemi 'Cuda (5.8 seconds), '70 Mustang Boss 429 (5.3 seconds), or a '67 Corvette 427 (5.6 seconds). Losing to a high-compromise, race-intended musclecar brings no shame to a sport/utility, after all, how good are those coupes off-road?"

Okay, I'm sorry.....I'll try to refrain from ranting like this again....Bill, please accept my apologies.

I totally like this line from the Barrett Jackson listing...

The front end is adjustable by 3" and has been built to where highway speeds are attainable with no vibration whatsoever.

Holy cow.... millions of cars leave the factories and docks every day that can attain highway speeds with no vibration whatsoever.....and this is a special feature??

How about....wheels actually turn round and round?  Doors open AND close... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Good to see you posting/ranting Jay... How is the new location treating ya? Weather has been a little ifffy lately by what we have seen on TV... and here it was 68 degrees today and just beautiful .

Yeah that MJ auction is something else. Like PT Barnum said, "There's a sucker born every minute". The steering is not adjustable, and the stock passenger tie rod end is completely maxed out at 6" of lift. Its useless for offroad use with stock steering at that amount of lift. But cosmetically, its hard to find one as clean as that one.

Anyway, everything's good....

Except I found me a Georgia Peach who recently blew up my 5.9 (so no racing right now), but that's okay, she knows how to keep her man home at night so I'm not mad at her, and I can fix the Jeep.

It'll be done in a week or so...

BTW, the weather here in Coastal GA is way more mild than CenTX, cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter....but there's way too many trees here.  I hate not being able to see the horizon.  Makes me wanna go in the lumber business just so I can see farther than 100 yards.

No apology needed. I think we all feel like that at times. I've seen lovingly restored (every nut and bolt) CJ-3Bs go for around $10,000 which is usually about half what the guy spent doing the restore. The market won't bear the price at this time.
But then you see things like those two Wagons (and yes, they were late '50s early '60s Station Wagons, not Wagoneers) sell at the Big Bucks auction houses for more money than any of us has. Yes they're beautiful but they're so out of my league that they might as well be a Lamborghini Aventador (which I'd love to have).
Let's just hope that kind of market never catches up to our little CJ world or we'll all be looking for something else to play with. :(
