Would be Jeepin' but...
« on: September 18, 2012, 12:35:50 AM »
Carl (Carlsjeep) came all the way from Kentucky to Southern Utah to drive the trails, but it seems that other things are getting in the way. We hadn't driven trails for too many days when my Jeep needed the tranny pulled (see earlier post). Here he is putting the final touches on the tranny/transfercase prior to re-installation.

Today I was called to the airport to install a new magneto in a friend's airplane. Once again Carl was recruited to assist. However, I noticed that he had a sign tucked away in his Jeep that says, "Will work on planes for a plane ride." Before the day was over he had a ride in the one he is working on as well as the big one in the hangar behind him.

Don't believe him if he tells you he isn't having a good time.

I will work on aircraft for free rides. They were finishing up a King Air C90B for a test flight so I hitched a ride. Arlan the test pilot is taking the aircraft out of the hanger.

This is a view of Lost Valley that we Jeeped in last week. Notice the green wash that the Indians would raise crops and live in.

Arlan the pilot on left and the avionics tech on the right are checking and adjusting the instruments.  We are at 11,480 ft and a little over 240 knots.

Another beautiful sunset high in the air but the sun has already set if your on the ground.

Here's a photo of the sun through the high cirrus from 11,500 feet just before it set that I took on the flight with Carl.

The plane we flew sitting on the ramp as night falls.

Now, let's go Jeepin', Carl.

WOW, simply beautiful, love it.  You guys are having too much fun, thanks for sharing.
I never tire of seeing planes fly.  I think I'd get sick of seeing the same planes flying over the house but I find myself looking up everytime.

Wow....that is a NICE King Air.  I've said it before and I'll say it again....I can't wait until I retire!  Of course, that will only be in 30 or 40 years... :-[

Calvin and I went on a flight with Arlan to look for roads and ruins. We found them and more. The first photo is of some cone shaped rocks on a slope.

Here we are, engine off gliding along Comb Ridge wall with a 1000 ft wall. We glided for a little over 10 miles along the wall. There was a strong West wind that hit the wall and caused a strong updraft at the crest of the wall. Arlan is a glider pilot but this is the first time he tried it in his 172. We could have gone on for miles but he didn't want to turn the main power off and it was draining the battery with it on.

These are some strange looking rock formations I was fascinated by.

This is an interesting looking twisting Canyon.

This is a ruin called the Citadel. It's on a round cone shaped formation that is connected to the Mesa by a narrow saddle of stone. That is the only way to the ruin and if anyone tried to cross they could pick anyone off as they tried to cross it.

I'm really quite troubled. Carl came to do some Jeepin' but all he ever seems to do is work projects. Besides the others I have posted here, this photo catches him painting a garage (the garage of the pilot in the above pics).

But when we finished the garage we were able to drag him out into the canyons for a little Jeepin'. We first went through a sagebrush forest.

Then the trail led us out onto some slickrock.

It was a great ride in beautiful, unique landscape.

Just so you know--Carl truly is a good man.  He IS very willing to help whenever needed by me or others he has met while visiting here.  Goes to show--you meet the best people driving flat fender Jeeps.
