Leaving a forum because of disagreement
« on: January 05, 2012, 02:44:39 PM »
A forum is a lot different than face to face discussion. It's easy to misunderstand things and then there are attitudes. Some take it personal when a poster disagrees with something they said or has an opposing way or idea. I have left two sites because the owners of the sites were totally unreasonable and disrespectful to me and others. I don't leave a site because I don't agree with something someone posted and got into a hot discussion about it.

I think the thread that Larry took issue with was the thread about shimming the bearings in the steering knuckle, or so it seems. He never posted after that. I discuss all kinds of hot topics with people online, face to face and email, even with the ones that have completely opposite opinions of mine. Some of them get loud and hostile but I still talk to them and consider them a friend.

On a site that deals with mechanics, machining and such skills you will always find people with different ideas and opinions and knowledge. When a person is telling how to do such and such you really don't know their background or knowledge and only a fool would take everything as gospel. I am a mechanic and machinist but by no means know everything about everything. I post what I know but sometimes what I know is only my experience of it or something like it. That is where a problem can start.

Having done a lot of trouble shooting I don't take anything for granted and I don't trust the results of what someone found and the problem is still there. Trusting others work or trouble shooting results has bit me in the butt so I don't do it.

This is all one can do, post what they know about a subject and not take offense at someone else's experience about it. On occasion I have argued that their way is wrong rather than just saying "I believe your mistaken about doing it that way", I should have just said that and stopped.

I am sorry Larry won't post here and wish he would reconsider. However, since he no longer visits the forum it would be hard for him to know we want him back, unless we post a request on the CJ2 site or PM him.

It's very important to have an open mind and discuss things. An open discussion on the CJ2 site led me to do the metering rod tool test. The reason was, I was getting what I though was conflicting info from several posts. It turned out that it was not as much miss info as miss understanding what was said. I did what I did to resolve my mind, not prove anyone was wrong and I was right and anyone is still free to accept what I found or disregard it and I won't be offended. I wish Larry could have done the same.

Well said, Carl.  Too often people let their egos get in their way and, as a result, get a bit "high centered".  Forums like this one probably aren't the best fit for people who always need to be right.  Thanks for your post.

It's not a matter of always being right but of being respected for what experience and expertise you bring to the table. I've been around the horn too many times and have little patience with newbies who feel compelled to jump right in and not just offer an opinion but to forcefully argue against sound advice based on limited experience with one vehicle, and/or based on something they read somewhere else, or were "told" by someone once upon a time.

I completely understand you feeling that way. Some times when I explain how something works or how to fix it and someone gives what I know to be wrong or dangerous info I cringe and try to explain why it is wrong and won't work. Beyond that you can do nothing to change their mind because they know they are right and everyone else is wrong. That has happened face to face and on forums and there is nothing I can do but to say what I know is right hoping someone will hear the whole conversation or read the whole thread and do research and find the truth for themselves.

There are also times I may get confused about the question and say the wrong thing but I try to correct that as quick as I can.

I really think Frank was TRYING his best to make you mad.

EDIT: you may have noticed I keep my 'tater trap closed on some subjects because I know nothing about it. While I am a mechanic and machinist Jeeps are a new breed to me and I am learning along with others.
