More pics of my recent ride

As I said in the earlier thread, my friend from Denver flies over from time to time to do a little Jeeping. �Since he's been back he's downloaded the pics from his camera and emailed them on to me. �So I will now post some of his pics.

We went out first thing in the day with his plane to seek out our destination from the air. �Here are some shots of the area from his plane. �I sat behind the pilot and on the same side so we would see that same thing out the OPEN window. �I took the pics with his camera. �Here the old road cuts up through the side canyon and then back along the rim. �Very scenic.



Flying over the canyons. �Dropping a little lower for a closer look.



Spotting cliff dwellings from the air (as close as we safely dared to get--and I zoomed in some as well). �Now to connect with the ruins by Jeep on the ground (See my earlier thread). �



Again, the pics don't portray the roughness nor difficulty of the trail. �Suffice it to say that I will not take my Jeep over this trail ever again. �It's ideal for a rock crawler or a Rubicon with big tires and lockers, etc. �This is one of the places in the trail where I photographed the modified Samaria negotiating the climb in my first posting of this ride.




And the CJ-2A following. �I just couldn't shake that thing.  Notice in the background the same side canyon shown in the first pic above from the air with the road winding up through it and then out on top.  We are Jeeping the same area we overflew that morning.

Nice shots Calvin, I wish I was there with ya'll. Calvin, put the photo's from the first post and these as well on the CJ2 site, they will like to see them.

     Thanks for your responses.  Both of you suggest my putting these pics on the CJ2A site.  I have visited there from time to time.  Seems like there's lots more going on over there (lots more 2As as well).  I have never registered on the 2A site because I wasn't sure a CJ-3Aer would be totally welcome since we have our own 3A site.  I have seen many of the 3A members there, however.  Also, I have been a bit conscientious about posting so many pics and long posts on the 3A page where you all know me and put up with me.  I'm not sure the members on the 2A page would be so accommodating.   I don't remember seeing such long postings there.

Well, I have a slightly different take on this...Calvin, stay right where you are here on the 3A page!  Those 2A guys have got enough going on - resources are more scarce over here and we need to keep you right here in our little private club!  If they want to see what we're up to, well, MAYBE we'll let them in to OUR site.

Seriously though...in one of the above photos you mention a trail where you will not take your 3A again.  Can I ask why not?  Was it not enough power, ground clearance, or were you just afraid you would break or scratch up your jeep?  Maybe not enough traction?  Just curious, thanks for the great shots!

Tom, I think it was ground clearance but Calvin can tell you more. Scroll down to More Jeeping in Southern Utah for more photo's and info.

As to the CJ2 site, they have 6 forums with several discussion groups in each. In the CJ2A discussion area they have a discussion group for Jeep photo's and Stories that is a good place to put trips. I think they would enjoy seeing our trips as much as we do.

I am beginning to believe there are a lot of us that post on both sites. I do know questions have been asked by the same person on both sites and I am one of them doing that.

 ï¿½In response to your question as to why I wouldn't take my Jeep on a certain trail again, I will explain. �I painstakingly restored my Jeep to fully enjoy it like I did the Jeeps I had as a teenager.








During each step of the restoration my heart was set on four-wheeling, not shows or parades. �I have always been a mechanic of sorts. �Learned to work on my bicycles, then worked on motorcycles and old Jeeps. �Had my first Jeep when I was 14 (16 in the photo below). �


Evolved into airplanes. �Learned to fly when I was 15 (I lied about my age because you have to be 16 to get a student pilot's license). �Photo of my first airplane the day I got it.


A few months later after some TLC and paint. I was then studying Aeronautics at Utah State University. �Took on the project long before I received my Federal Aviation Admin license as an airplane mechanic. �


When I retired 4 years ago I started my Jeep project. �It took my 15 months working nearly full-time. �I took it to a show because I was pressured by my friends to do so. �


And it has been in the 4th of July parade every year.


But I get my greatest enjoyment when I'm out 4-wheeling. �




Mostly in my youth and even now, I have Jeeped enough to know just about the limits of these little Willys. �It's amazing what these little Jeeps will do and where they will go. �When asked what equipment contributed to the Allied victory of World War II, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower answered, "The bazooka, the Jeep, the atom bomb, and the DC-3 (Posted at the Air & Space Museum next to a DC-3 airplane). �I'm willing to take my Jeep to the limits, but not beyond. �In other words, I'm willing to used my Jeep, but not abuse it. �The trail I won't take my Jeep on again is really a great trail for a Jeep that has been highly modified as a rock crawler. �Since my Jeep is stock, for me to get it over the boulders and crevices, instead of crawling with super low gears, lockers, and huge tires, I would have to get a run at it and with the speed my Jeep would have to slam through and jump over the hurdles as it was not designed to do. �To me that is abuse. �

Took me a long time to get to the answer. �Most 3A members know my story and have seen my pics. �This answer is for you. �This is such an old thread/post that most members won't return to it to see it anyway. �Thanks for asking.

Calvin, I enjoy seeing your photos, you can post them weekly and I'd still look at them.  Thanks for posting and thanks for the anwer.  I'm new to the jeep, never had one as a kid, so learning from you guys the limits of these old machines is really valuable, thank you.
