As far as I know all original tanks have the U shaped pickup tube. Perhaps the aftermarket stuff doesn't. Here is a poor photo of the tube inside the tank where it picks up fuel...

Interesting. I think I'll try running something through the tube again but I think it's clogged at the bend and won't let anything through.  I even tried some thin welding wire from my mig setup and it wouldn't make the turn.  I did place an order for a new tank so probably all a moot point now.  Thanks!

My aftermarket tank from Walcks has the U shaped pickeup tube.

A local fellow who had a jeep for sale said he unclogged the pickup tube with some aircraft safety wire, doubled over and forced through the hole...safety wire is pretty small gauge, but very flexible and strong......

That's worth a shot.  I have a whole roll of safety wire...  In other news, I disconnected the fuel line and put it in a cup of gas and cranked it over.  Fuel pump is working as it should!  After fiddling with it some I realized I had the spark plug wires backwards.  I'm sure I'm not the first to do this... Once the right way fired right up!  First time it's run in 2 years since I brought it home.  Good oil pressure and sounded smooth.  Getting close now!  ;D

Oh now that's interesting.  Looks like it's designed to allow all the crud to collect around the drain plug so you could drain it out from there.  I like it.  I ended up getting a new tank and tossed that in a few days ago. I've been able to get it out and driving!  I'll get some pics here in a day or so.  Really feels good to get it out moving.  I loaded it up on a car hauler today and took it to the state patrol to get inspected.  The PO botched getting the title transferred over into his own name and sat on it for years before I got it.  It looks like I shouldn't have too much trouble getting it titled though.  Once I'm through the whole process I'll do a quick write up on my experience here in Colorado dealing with that.  Thanks for all the help getting to this point!
