My dad and I picked this up yesterday. Its a 1926 Fordson. I have to do a little tinkering with it to get it running. The guy that we got it from said it was a pain to start. I think it just needs a little more adjustment.

It has a pickering governor which I guess is pretty sought after. Its not hooked up yet.

Is it magneto ignition?

Or maybe those Model T type coils?

It uses buzz coils and there is a magneto on the flywheel just like the model T's.

I did a little reading as I never really understood the Model T ignition....

It works the same as a regular coil and battery setup, just each spark plug has its own coil. It also works 180 degrees out of a regular coil. The buzz coils make a spark when the points are closed instead of a regular coil which makes a spare when the points open. There is a distributor of sorts on the front of the engine to tell which coil to fire.

I guess it's a little like a modern ignition where each spark plug has it's own coil and the distributor, rather than directing the high voltage to the plug, sends the low voltage to each coil...

The flywheel based magneto is interesting...kinda like old lawn mowers with the single magnet in the flywheel...this just has multiple magnets...

But what closes the points...is there a solenoid of sorts inside the coil box..? I have a couple of those old coils, ought to look them over....

There's no solenoid. The distributor is the "points". I think you are getting confused with he points that are on top of the coil. When electricity is sent through the low tension coil, the magnetism from that makes the points on top of the flutter which sends the spark to the spark plug.

Its much easier to understand when you look at a single cylinder engine. Maybe this will help.

The coil box points are the one's I was thinking of...just wondered what made them "flutter"...

I'll look at the T coil that I have and see if I can give myself a jolt!

I'm not sure which is worst. Diving in a project that no one has touched or starting with something that is done and just needs the bugs worked out of it.
