Need a starting point and advice
« on: November 04, 2013, 09:40:01 AM »
Hi, As you may know (or remember), I own a DJ-6 1965 and I recently bought a CJ-6 1966 as a part jeep for it.

My plan is to rebuilt the DJ-6 with parts coming from the CJ-6. (mainly the body)

Even If I know that a CJ-6 value is greater than a DJ-6, I will restore the DJ-6 since it's already titled and running. The CJ-6 engine is stuck as well as the front axle.

This will be my first rebuilt. I'm not a mechanical guy's.
I want it stock as close as I can get it but I already have a list of modifications...like it will be 4wd. It is already.

Questions #1; Where should I post my project? Here or on 3B forum, earlycj5....? I don't want to annoy 3A people but in other hand I feel more confortable since I "know" people here.

Questions #2: Should I start to dismantle the DJ-6 and make a list of what I need or start with the CJ-6 and keep what is good?

I have more questions but I will wait answer on question #1...

I think cross posting both here and the early CJ5 page might be the best bet for you. This is a find section to post in although personally I wouldn't care if you posted in stock jeep projects either.

First thing to do is sit down and assess what all is wrong that you want to fix on the DJ...Then decide your end goal for it.. Do you want to just fix it up so you can use it, make it a dependable driver, or restore it for show? (Or something in between?)

Then you need to decide if you can do the job in chunks...can you just do the drivetrain and be happy with it or will you only be satisfied with an every nut and bolt job?

What are you capable of doing in your own shop? How much room do you have to store the parts taken off?

Lots of things to consider...

I don't want to do a full restoration but a rebuilt. I just want an old good strong looking jeep to drive.

I don't want to start big job on the engine...I don't see myself rebuilding the engine.
But I want to dismantle it to the frame and rebuilt it.

My plan is:

1-Taking a lot of pictures of the actual DJ-6 as it is.
2-Make a list of what is not good/or good.
3-Make a list of what I want to add.
4-Start to dismantle it.

The body is bad enough that I can't drive it right now. It need brake job also.

In that case I would start by taking what you know you need off the CJ6 in as large a chunk as you can. If you know you are using the tub, take the assembly and don't pull the gages , etc out of it, just pull what is heavy to make it easier and leave the small stuff. When it is time to install the tub you can start choosing which gages you want, rewire, etc...

Whichever axles you will use, put up on stands and rebuild /repair/reseal them.  Clean and paint as part of the process.

Once you get your DJ stripped as afar as you plan on, repair/repaint the chassis and start building from there. I think I'd bring it down to a bare frame myself.

Watch out for mission creep.

Pascal,
I agree with Bill.  I would like to see your project here.  I don't visit the 3B or CJ5 page.  (I have to set a limit).

Watching your project would help me develope a better knowledge of a CJ-5, CJ6 and DJ-6.  See, I already learned something...I didn't know there was a DJ-6. ;)

I agree.
I'd like to see what you do with it.
Since it's a Jeep, I'd say "Non Jeep Projects" is not the place for it. Put it in "Stock Jeep Projects".
I would recommend you join the 3B forum since there is a DJ specific section there.
All I've ever heard about the Early CJ-5 forum is that people can't get registered and it keeps going down. So I'd give it a try only if you really want to. Otherwise this group and the 3B DJ guys will give you the most help.

I'd like to see the DJ progress here too.

I have, more than once, posted in one forum and then just copied and pasted the same post onto other forums. Like you, I'm most comfortable on this page but sometimes need to stray elsewhere for specific answers. Copy and paste is a great way to accomplish that.

My only fear is that once I start learning about your rebuild I will expand my own horizons and open up the possibility dragging home yet another Jeep. Flat fender opportunities are pretty rare up here, which is probably a good thing. If I start looking seriously at other models I'm really in trouble....

Add my YES to seeing your CJ6 project posts, never met a 3A builder who did not love all things Jeep.

Ok, I will post it here and on the 3B forum. It have an F134 engine so 3B people should be able to help me with it.

The DJ come with two fuel tank. I decided to keep it.
Do you think that the tool box on the CJ-6 will fit in my 3A? It should.

I will end out with two hard top. I will save the better one and sale the other.

The CJ-6 come with one large driver seat. The trim was 60/40 and it missing the passenger seat.
So I will sale it also or see if I can reuse it as a back seat. I don't know.
I would like to find those long rear seat that goes over the fender on each side. I have three kids...

New seat belt and roll cage will be needed.

I paid 900$ for the DJ and 350$ for the CJ. So 1250$ as a startup. I would like to put less than 5000$...we will see.

The DJ has already a transfert case and a front differential. I'll keep it. I think I will try to take the rear V brace on the CJ frame and install it on the DJ frame.

If I can find an overdrive...I would like one.

I would like to install a dual master reservoir. I don't know if I will upgrade the brake or not. I need to see what I have.

I will start to post pictures as soon as the jeep will be in the garage. Do I tell you that I have a wife also?  :)
