My v6 cj3a
« on: July 02, 2017, 12:46:51 AM »
I'm pretty new to the forum. But if like to share my almost completed cj3a. Really only need tires now, but cannot afford them at the moment. V6 231ci out of an early 80s gm car. The exhaust was made by Waldron exhaust. And it's for a v6 cj5 I cut 2 inches out of the center where it runs down the frame. I took a bit of a gamble and it fits great, and sounds great. T case rebuilt by me, trans rebuilt by me, rear axle also. Body work & paint by me also.

Really nice looking jeep! And I like the barn too...

Those look like the old Mohawk tires I used to have....

I just love to see the Willys 3A's with the Buick V-6's.
I've got  a couple in the making myself.

Man, it looks nice. I'd like to see some engine shots too...
I'd love to hear details about emergency brake cable interference, oil pan, exhaust, etc.

Looks like the tub is in excellent condition....did it need a lot of work?

I'll bet it's a kick to drive with that 6 in there.

Did you change any of the gear/diff ratios?

Unfortunately the tub was long gone this is a replitub. It has it's original 5.38 gears. It really could use an overdrive, it's on the to-do list. I plan on keeping the gearing it has because I love how slow it crawls in 4 low. But on the road 2 high, it's pretty ridiculous. I usually start off in 2nd because 1st isn't that realistic. And then all you have is 3rd after that haha.

Smart move using the Dauntless frame brackets.
Gives it the factory look.

Did you relocate the transfer case mounting toward the right  ?

@oldtime. The stock transfer case is in its stock location. I had it flexed out with a jack before i finally bolted it down, to see if the front driveshaft hit anything, and it clears everything, it's very close though. The front of the engine is left as much as it will go. I actually bent the shaft to the belcrank to clear the exhaust. No issues.

Devin,

Does this number just in front of the brace on your frame mean anything? is it part of the vin?

So if transfer case was not moved over and you have Dauntless engine brackets I would expect that the engine sets at an angle.
About 1-1/2" or 2" offset angle from front to rear mounts.
Is that correct ?

Yes the engine sits about 1-3/4 offset. I forget the exact measurement it was kind if a "okay that looks good there" so i welded them in.I did however make a modified transmission mount. It is angled a bit. But i wanted to keep the transfercase torque mount in it's stock place. And the numbers one the frame i stamped there. It matches my vin. I didnt do very good research and didnt know were to stamp so i saw pictures so i stamped it there to look good for DMV haha. Jeep isnt completly original so screw it. ;D

In about 1954 Willys began to stamp the sequence portion of the Serial Number in that location on the frame.
