T/C output shaft end play

OK....It was suggested that I check the output shaft end play in the attempt to isolate my high pitched noise....

So this is how I did it, while the T/C is still in the jeep...

I gave the shaft a couple of good raps with a copper faced knock-off hammer (wire wheel type)

I set up my new  :) dial gauge and then pried behind the nut to move the shaft rearward...

I get .004.....004 to .008 is the range....

I have one more shim, it's .002.......

Should I install the shim, or call it good?

What your measuring is the end play between two taper bearings. .004" is good and you don't need to change it. The front output shaft is supported by a ball bearing and doesn't need measuring the end play.

OK thanks Carl....I was concerned about getting an accurate measurement with it assembled and still in the jeep...but I tried it 3 or 4 times and it was the same each time..
