CJ5 Clutch In My 3A
« on: January 08, 2014, 09:18:58 PM »
I was a little surprised to find that I have a CJ5 clutch assembly attached to my L134 -3A engine. The clutch disc is 9 1/4". The flywheel has a 129 tooth ring gear. The starter has a 9 tooth Bendix. The ring gear, clutch disc and Bendix look near new, and the set up functions fine.

Question...Is there any advantage, or disadvantage to this set up?

I think the 9 1/4" clutch is the heavy duty disc.....most CJ-5 f-heads used the 8 1/2 disc like the L-heads...

I've heard the heavy duty clutches can be a bear on the left leg as the pedal pushes a lot harder but I don't know for sure. You plan on doing any heavy duty rock crawling or county fair tractor pulls?

The 9.25" HD clutch was an optional upgrade and can be retro-fitted to the standard 134 flywheel. You will have to drill and tap the flywheel, and I would rebalance it. It may require a slightly different clutch shaft. I seriously considered this upgrade for my 2A, but ended up putting a standard clutch in.

The HD clutch will withstand higher torque and wear and tear.
