Dana 18 speedo drive gear removal

I've torn down my 18 for new bearings and seals, but I cannot get the speedo drive gear off the input shaft.  I was led to believe by my research that it would slide off with just a bit of a bump, but no go.

Any suggestions?  Something I could soak it in?  There's no obvious rust or anything, so I'm somewhat stumped.

Can you rock the yoke a bit and see if the gears will unmesh a bit while working drive off?

Yeah, I've read through all those threads already.  But each just says slide the speedo drive gear on or off, as if it's supposed to be that easy--which I'm sure it is supposed to be, but it ain't for me.

I was hoping someone else on here had once had a stuck speedo drive gear and discovered some kind of magic potion or juju incantation that helps it slide off.

Quick update in case someone has this same problem in the future: I soaked the entire shaft in CLR for quite a while to dissolve some of the crud that may have built up, and then I used a gear puller to pull on the bearing, which helped slide the speedo gear off.

I've since rebuilt the transfer case, and I installed it a few days ago.  Life is good.

Was your TC unusually crudded up or rusted inside? I disassembled mine last night and the speedo gear just slid right off like it was supposed to.

No, it was fine.  I think it had just sat for a very long time and the crud had solidified between the gear and the shaft. The oil/water sludge in it, however, looked like, for lack of a better word, brown/yellow/green puke.  Fortunately, because it had a leak, the gears weren't sitting in much of that.
