I think oil lines are wrong on my L134
« on: September 17, 2014, 11:43:30 PM »
Hi All,
I've lurked here for years. I've posted a few times, but it's been years. I have a CJ3a with a solidly rusted/frozen motor. I bought a supposedly running L134 5 years ago, and now I'm just getting to it.
I would like to fire the "new" motor up on a stand, but I need to sort out the bits: It came with an oil filter, but it was not installed
This "new" engine has a copper line going to a fitting on the back driver side of the engine, low down, near the bellhousing. It seems like it should go to the top side of the oil filter housing. There is a rubber hydraulic line that is loose that goes into the timing cover. I believe this line would go into the bottom of the oil filter housing(?).
All the stuff I've searched online seems to indicate the "bypass" oil line comes from a fitting in the block near the fuel pump. Is this true in all cases? Is the fitting at the back from the same oil gallery? If I buy new oil lines should I just fit the "long" line to the port by the fuel pump?
(my original engine has no oil filter due to a HY/LO pump, so I can't compare, and neither engine has an oil pump bracket)
Any advice appreciated....thanks.

The fitting back by the bell housing goes to the oil pressure gauge. The top fitting of the oil filter goes to a port behind the fuel pump. The bottom port of the oil filter goes to the fitting on the timing gear cover. I'm sure someone on here has some pictures of the correct routing of these lines.

Okay, thanks.
I look at the block and there is a plug fitting in the block a bit forward and below the opening for the fuel pump. I notice when I put the fuel pump in place there isn't much room for an oil line...I presume that there must be a 90deg elbow for the oil line to snake up behind the fuel pump body?

Are the center two plugs (pointing downward) coolant drains?

Sorry for the questions...I guess I'm going to have to really start studying all there is about Willys Jeeps....

The center two plugs also access the oil gallery....the gallery is sort of a reservoir that runs the length of the engine on that side. The four openings, two of which are plugged, and the oil pump open into that gallery..

The coolant drain is on the other side of the block, below the distributor..or on some engines it is behind the generator...not easily accessed...

Here are a couple pictures....there is a 90 at the front behind the oil pump and at the rear...

The two middle pipe plugs are left in place and typically permanently installed(rusted!)

Thanks guys. And thanks for the pictures.
I see now that the oil line IS a tight fit behind the fuel pump. And it's interesting the flex line for the oil gauge is only up to the firewall.
Well, I've got work to do!

Okay, I bought (mailordered) new oil lines and an oil filter bracket (didn't have one on either engine I have) and the dang oil line fittings don't fit my filter.  The oil lines have loose nut flare style fittings on each end. First of all, what is this style fitting? Is it 37 deg inverted flare?
The only place right now my engine will take this flare fitting is on timing cover. The oil filter housing has 1/8 pipe thread female. Is the filter housing supposed to have brass adapter fittings (NPT to inverted flare)?
The 90 deg block fitting I have I guess is too big (it does look like inverted flare.
So, I guess I need to get adapter fittings for the filter housing, and a correct 90 deg "ell" 37 deg inverted flare female (which is I think 7/16-24 female thread)

Can someone confirm these are 37 deg inverted flare? What do stock jeeps use? The oil lines say the application is 41 to 53 Willys Jeep.
Is this a hardware store item? (Dang I'm worried I'll have to mail order something...hardware stores nowadays don't "specialized" stuff less and less)

1955-CJ5,
Thanks very much for your help. Excellent pictures!
I have finally figured it out what these hose ends are. (It was a pretty big challenge for me in "google" world to find out what they are; it took me a few hours)
It turns out these are 1/4" tube 45 deg inverted flares. The swivel nuts used on a 1/4" nominal tube size line is 7/16-24 thread. So an adapter is needed to adapt the inverted flare to the NPT thread in the engine block and oil filter housing.

Just in case someone comes across this thread with the same question as I had, I'll fill in the details below....

McMaster Carr (industrial supplier) turned out to be the best source for me to nail down what the fitting dimensions and thread pitch is.

So, the L134 with bypass CJ3a oil filter requires 3 adapters to fit the oil lines. (The "4th" connection is at the timing cover and it already should have a inverted flare welded/brazed into the cover....oil lines should just screw into that.)

So the other 3 fittings needed are:
One piece of a 90 deg elbow (1/8" NPTmale x 1/4 inverted" flare) that fits into the block next to the fuel pump opening.
McMaster Part number 6432T126
Grainger I think is 5MTE6

Two pieces of a Straight adapter inverted flare to NPT male 1/8" NPTmale x 1/4" inverted flare. One adapter goes into the inlet of the oil filter housing, and the other one goes onto the outlet.
McMaster Carr Part number 6432T112
Grainger I think is 6JLFO

In addition, another inverted flare adapter might be needed to fit the oil pressure gauge line (at the back of the block). the elbow adapter listed above can be used there.

After all this "research" I did, I could probably just have stopped at a good hydraulic supply house and they would have I.D'd what I needed. But it's hard for me to take off from work sometimes for these kinds of errands. I did check my local local Graingers online and they don't have any in stock, and the straight one requires me to buy a 10 pack. So I'm going to hit a local hydraulic place Monday. If they don't have 'em, I'll just go with McMaster.

Thanks again for your help. Onward!

Check out Ace Hardware also they really bumped up their fitting lines a few years ago and have a lot of different kinds. Not sure what department they might be in but I have found all the pieces I have needed at Ace

Well, I tried an ACE, True Value, HomeDepot, two auto parts stores. Nothing.
I ended up going to a hydraulic supply place called "Fluid Dynamics" in South Windsor Ct and I got 4 fittings for less than 6 bucks in less than 3 minutes.

So that was cool, but what wasn't so cool is I broke a head stud trying to retorque the nuts (for my new oil filter bracket). Gaaah. Off comes head. Eroded head stud from corroded head gasket (directing gases right to stud). Now I'm drilling and searching for gaskets.....Interestingly, the engine has standard size pistons.

I think I'm getting wrapped up in a classic domino effect.....

I got a head gasket through Napa.....but you might as well replace all the studs while you are at it....Walck's and others have the studs and nuts....

Domino for sure.....!
