Chassis Holes...Am I Missing Something?

Re-assembly is almost complete. �Please pay no attention to the dust build up. �

I have two threaded holes in the passenger side of my 3A chassis. �Don't remember there being anything mounted here before I took the Willys apart.

So, am I missing something? �What belongs here?

The upper hole with the arrow and the hole to its right (with a bolt in it) are for the early style fender. The splash apron was bolted to the frame at those points. Do you still have the original right fender?

Lower left hole possibly for optional propeller shaft guard?

Hi Bob.

I was begining to think that I stumped the group as it took a bit to hear back. �My driver side fender does have the bolted on splash apron. �The passenger fender does not. �And I think both fenders are original to this Willys. �They were clearly both painted original Pasture Green. �As was all the sheet metal on this one. �Is it possible I ended up with one older and one newer style fenders during production?

I ask this only because this Willys has other contradictions. �I have read your "Dating the 3A" page. �Another od example is my radiator mount. �It is a bottom mount with the rod from the radiator to the cowl. That's fine, but the Jeep is a 1949, �#36662. �According to the listed bulletins, �it should be a grille mount. �Or is this one of those Jeeps that fell into the... �

 "During the production of the Model CJ-3A with the side mount radiator, it was necessary to use a small quantity of bottom mounted radiators".

I don't know, this is all very confusing at times. �

After reading your post on the propeller guard, like always, you are right. �I did find some information on the 3B page regarding the probable use for the lower threaded hole.

During the 1949 model year 3 different right fender types appear on CJ-3As. Your fender looks so nice �:) I just assumed it had been replaced �:-[ �

Your Jeep does fall into that period when a batch of bottom mounted radiators were used, so that is normal for your 3A also.

Thanks Bob. �I appreciate your comments on the fender. �But if you got up close and personal, you would see many imperfections. �I wanted to keep as much original sheet metal as I could, but both fenders required all new support channels, patches behind the support channels, a bit of work around the battery tray, and new sheet metal for the entire top of the fenders. �This fender also required a few hours to pound out the area that attaches to the grille. �I should have patched a few more drilled mounting holes that aren't needed anymore, but lost track of good holes and bad holes.

They were pretty rough. �In hind sight, replacing them would have probably been a better use of my time. �I know what your thinking..."he put all that effort into this, but didn't restore it back to original...crazy!"

I used the same strategy, use as much of the original as possible and fix what you can.  It looks to me like you have a real nice looking resto, that is a pretty jeep.  Nice work.
