Gearboxes and axles / Re: new crown throw out bearing makes noise

So the solution was to get in it and drive?!

That's the type of fix I like!  Keep it rolling!

I'm curious that the bearing's make noise when not engaged.  The Clutch Release Bearing (throwout) shouldn't be making contact and therefore just sitting on the front shaft housing (Main Drive Gear Bearing Retainer).  When you press the pedal, the bearing contacts the clutch Release Levers and begins to spin.  It spins at engine speed as long as you keep the pedal pressed.  Then it stops spinning when you let the pedal out and the bearing is no longer in contact with the clutch.

Do you have the clutch pedal adjusted to have 1.5" free pedal before you feel the resistance from making contact?

When you separated the transmission and engine, did you replace the pilot bushing also?  Odly enough, the pilot bushing would be exact opposite of the throwout bearing; quiet when driving but possibly noisy when clutch is engaged allowing the flywheel to spin on a stationary Main Drive.

I do believe if you open the sealed throwout bearing, it will eventually fail.

As I've not been on for a while, I'm curious if you're still working this or did you resolve it?

the noise when away after 40 miles, i did check the free play of the pedal. all seems well. the pilot bushing was new 1800 mile ago.
as for now i'd call it good. glad the forum is back on again :)

It is with a very heavy heart that I learned of Dave's passing.

Like so many others, I visited **eWillys** almost every day. Dave's passion for preserving Willys history, documenting Jeeps, and sharing knowledge inspired enthusiasts all over the world. His work will continue to educate and inspire future generations of Jeep owners.

I would also like to share something that many members of **The CJ3A Page** may not know.

In the summer of **2012**, after the members purchased The CJ3A Page from Jonathan George (Jeep Rescue), we faced the challenge of moving and preserving the entire website and forum. Dave immediately offered his help. He shared his knowledge, helped us set up hosting with Midphase, guided us through the technical migration, and made sure we could successfully transfer the site without losing the community that Jonathan had built.

Looking back today, I realize that The CJ3A Page might not have remained online without the generosity and support of people like Dave.

Over the last fourteen years, thousands of Willys enthusiasts have continued to benefit from this community. Every discussion, every technical article, every photo, and every friendship formed here owes a small debt to the people who quietly stepped forward when help was needed. Dave was one of those people.

On behalf of The CJ3A Page community, I want to offer my deepest condolences to Brenda, his family, and everyone whose life he touched.

Thank you, Dave, for your friendship, your kindness, your knowledge, and for helping preserve a community that continues to bring Willys enthusiasts together every single day.

I like to think that Dave is already exploring another old Jeep trail somewhere, discovering history that the rest of us haven't found yet.

Rest in peace, my friend. We'll keep the history alive.

First opportunity to post here and thank Bob and all the other hard workers up there in PA.  I really enjoyed my first Picnic (didn't really care for the drive up there or back, though)  :o

Got to see a good representation of 3B's too!

Thank you!

So this jeep is a family inheritance.  Makes it even more special.  Did the top do any favors in preserving the interior?  30 yrs in a field is rough.
