The only parts of the body that can be salvaged is the hood, grill, windshield frame and the dash maybe the tailgate there was no floor in the back it had plywood floor and fender wells the drive train on a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate 6.5 my plans are to customize the engine with bi y headers and dual carbs not sure of the size yet but I will probably use either mikuni or Keihan CV motorcycle carbs with coolant ports to prevent carb icing being a kawasaki motorcycle dealer  I have a lot of experience with the tuning, I also think I can increase the size and still eliminate the hick up from a quick throttle change that is experienced when using over sized carbs, my goal is to get around 75 to 80 hp out of it.

Here is the beginning of my restoration first thing is the frame, items that needed repair includes rear cross member, front bumper the 2 left side body mounts which I ended up making my own since all I could find were the cj5 style and I made a frame rail support for the left frame rail due to the excessive pitting on the top and bottom I primed both parts then I sandwiched with calk between the edges and around rivets, and bolt hole locations after it was sand witched together, I then drilled all locations I installed rivets and body mounts and then added bolts to help prevent warping while I stitch welded the top and bottom. I am using a red oxide primer with semi gloss enamel black frame paint.

Which sports car does that manifold fit, I like what you are doing. I am considering using two kehein constant velocity carbs from a Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 on my project.

Gearboxes and axles / Re: overdive or not

I agree 100% with what old time is saying. My initial post asked if anyone hade tried the 4.27 ratio but I have not had any replies to that but from the feed that I have received on how the OD pulls I feel if I use a 4.27 without OD it will pull better than OD with 5.38 I have had a lot of experience with gearing and ratios. From my experience over the years the more direct you can go the less power it takes to pull the same load. Just for fun go to you tube and check out maasdam sorghum mills and you will see some of the old equipment that I have been working with over the last 45 years we use open gears with belts and chains also some old transmissions and rear ends from the 40's are incorporated into the mill. I will be doing a little engine work and I should be around 70 HP when done.

I was trying to find out how well OD pulled verses 4.27 ratio I do want lower RPM's. The  51 CJ3a I have has a dana 44 and so 4.27 gears are available for it so based on the input and discussion it looks like that is the option I will try. My reasoning is it should have less rolling resistance than 5.38 ratio with OD. Here is the calculation for running 2750 rpms with standard 28" tires is 55 MPH. It will not have my CJ done for a while but when I do I will update this post.

Its not about speed 50 to 55 is ok I am more concerned about running at a lower rpm while traveling also it is hilly around here and I would like it to pull the hills without downshifting

Gearboxes and axles / overdive or not
« on: December 10, 2018, 09:02:50 PM »
Has anyone replaced the rear end gears to a 4.27 ratio and if so how does it pull I have been considering an overdrive which is 125% speed gain and 4.27 would be 120% speed gain over 5.38 ratio. My thoughts are the 4.27 would pull easer because it has a little lower ratio. The overdrive systems use planetary gears and planetary gears pull harder than a direct gear drive would, so adding overdrive would have the extra drag of a planetary system along with the 125% gain in speed.
