That would be a regulator problem as it regulated the amount of volts going into the battery.  A battery cannot overcharge itself neither can the generator if the regulator is working properly.

Vapor lock is easy to check.  Wrap the fuel lines with a generous amount of tin foil.  That will soak up the heat.  Then drive like you normally do when haveing the problem.  If problem still exists, it is not vapor lock.

I have 2 of them in my jeep.  They are a silver switch that have a handle that moves side to side.  The reason I have 2 is they had 2 gen. and 2 batts.  They were set up to have 6v or 12v in series.  Flip one way and they disconnect flip the other way and they connect.  Flip them both on there was 12v to start farm equipt.

First check the vaccume at the fuel pump to see if it is working.  There may be breaks in line from there to the wiper motor causeing loss.  If it is not working there then time for replacement or rebuild.  That would be your choice. I think the line size is 1/2 in.  Take a piece of your old one in so you do get it right.
