Thanks for all the posts guys - they are very helpful.  The motor is stuck so didn't have opportunity to drive.  At the minimum I will do as you suggest, clean and flush, replace gaskets.  Assume it would be a good time to replace the clutch and throw out bearing?  I'm not certain what to look for on the pressure plates for wear, etc.  Everything looks good.  Worse wear was on the bracket that attachs to the throw out bearing.  Thanks again.  jeffb in sd

I got the tub off my frame on the 51 I'm working on.  Went well.  Working on getting the motor unstuck.  Plan to drop the transmission/transfer case and begin frame clean up and paint, new brakes, etc.  Anything special you would suggest to do to the tranny and transfer case?  Thanks in advance.  jeffb in sd

"Original"-- Technical Questions, Answers, Observations / Re: Flywheel
« on: November 06, 2011, 09:07:49 PM »
Would appreciate your opinions.  I just pulled my "stuck" motor yesterday.  Stripped it down and turned it over to fill pistons.  Found about 1/5 of the flywheel gears missing about 1/2 of the teeth on starter side.  Should I plan to replace the flywheel?  The teeth on the bendix gear are fine but I found a piece of gear on the floor near where I turned the motor over - appears to be part of an old bendix gear.  Apparently some abuse along the way for this 51.  Thanks for the help.  jeffb in sd

Is it necessary to pull the steering wheel, possible to take shaft out instead?  Thanks in advance for advise!

I had a 48 in high school with electric start.  My dad rebuilt the motor and we did put a foot starter on it.  Discovered I believe it was the shaft length was wrong so the starter gear wouldn't connect to the flywheel.  Worked fine, just didn't turn anything.

"Original"-- Technical Questions, Answers, Observations / TUB OFF HELP

Getting ready to take the tub off of my 51.  Any advise would be appreciated.  I know I will need a different passenger side fender, the cross member under the tranny is really banged and bent up - assume will replace, possible grill.  Anyone will parts please let me know.  Thank you for the help.  jeffb

I'm in the same boat with a 51 I just bought with a stuck motor.  I have read considerable experiences from the tractor old timers and have resorted to vinegar also.  Haven't worked on it for a week however vinegar continues to seap through the cylinders and amazing to see how much "crud" it is removing.  Have been spraying the valves as well.  Good luck.

F Bill - thank you for the very informative note.  The knowledge and information base out there is tremendous.  Thanks again

this fits the category of there are no stupid questions.  I'm new at all of this and it is very apparent someone of you are full fledged mechanics, historians, etc. - I mean that respectfully and I am enjoying my restore so far - 51 in pretty good shape.  I had a 48 in the later 60's during high school that was in worse body shape than the 51.  Question - can a guy buy plate metal and do your own welding on some of the body parts that have to be cut out?  My goal is a daily driver out of this one.  If I dump a pile of money into one I would like to find a 52.  Thanks guys.  jeffb in sd

Rambling, Malarky, Rants, Etc... / STUCK MOTOR - I'M STUCK
« on: October 24, 2011, 10:30:54 PM »
I've tried vinegar, several penetrating oils, diesel, tapping pistons with hammer and block, pulling, rocking, chipped tooth on the fly wheel from a flat bar, stripped crank shaft nut with a 3 foot cheater bar - all with absolutely not a movement.  I'm assuming this means pulling the motor and beating parts out?  I did take the tub off - believe it or not - all by myself with my tractor this weekend.  Did not damage the steering column.  Took the steering wheel off with seven days of penetrating oil and my hammer and a piece of oak.  Popped right off.  Not the same luck with the motor.  Thanks guys - jeffb

Wondering if any of you could offer some insight into sand blasters.  appears they can be as simple as hand held, no doubt slow but perhaps useable?  any suggestions?  thanks jeffb in sd
