Buy, Sell, Trade / Re: Donaldson Air Cleaner Assy.

Phil, Terry here in southern Maine. I'm rebuilding my Dad's '49 3A.  Please send me the pics if you would.  I'm 71, and if I don't finish this soon someone else will have to.  I do need the assembly.  Does the cross tube have the indent for the radiator rod?  Thanks, Terry

I'll be there this year.  Dad's Jeep is still FAR from being on the road, so if I can ride with someone it would be great. Terry

"Original"-- Technical Questions, Answers, Observations / Re: Hood

'PANELS PLUS' in Green, Maine changed its name to 'GREENS PANEL WORKS' and almost exclusively downsized to making GPW panels.  Just this December, Stephen, grandson of the company originator, said he was going out of business.  He did have stock left that would be sold first come-first serve.  He was also selling all of his shop equipment and machinery.  His number is 207-515-3784.  Sorry to see him go.  He did good work!  Terry in Maine

athawk11,  I think you did it.  Yes, the mounts are offset.  Along with no gussetts on the front of the frame, I have a 3A frame.  Without any kind of a body, it ws hard to tell.  So I'm firm in knowing it's a '49 3A, J-80966.  I'll gather all the other minor numbers from parts and start to bring him back to life.  It will be a long process.  I'll be asking many other questions as I go. Thanks for the help, Terry

ï¿½ About three years ago or so you had a discussion about RF fenders, 3As on 2As, frame changes, and how on the earlier battery supports the connecting strap from the fender to the holdown went down to the battery and on the later ones it went up to the battery. I dont have a body or fenders to see this on. I'm still trying to find if I have a 2A or 3A frame. Are there pictures anywhere of the two different battery supports? The better question for me is, is there a number of any kind somewhere on the frame that tells what part number it is and if it is a a 3 or 2A?

JB    This is a Cj I bought from the middle of a field as a parts vehicle for another project.  The owner had used it to pull trees out of the woods.  It had set in the woods for many years.  It still has some usable parts.  Paid $40.  Thanks for the look up.  Terry

I have a serial number tag with the number 453-GB1 12564.  If you can tell me what year and type this is, I'll tell you the rest of the story.  Thanks, Terry

Larry, It is a bottom mount radiator.  The support rod to the cowl is still attached.  And yes it's a 41 differential.  The cover is round instead of the squared sides of a 44.  I'll wait for your next clue!  Terry

Larry, it is gear driven.  By chasing info on the numbers for the generator, starter, rear axle, transmission and transfer case shifter shapes and lengths, and some other things, I think I can safely say, excluding the block and head, that this is a '49.  Because I do not have the body, I'm still not sure if it is a 2 or 3A.  When you said 'By the numbers that appears to be a 1946/47 CJ2A engine', what did those numbers say to tie it down to a 2A for those years?  Is there anything about the rolling chassis that would tell me 2 or 3A?  I can see this will be a long process and I really appreciate your help.  Terry

My Dad passed some thirty plus years ago. I've been hauling his rolling chassis (He tossed the body and serial no. plate) of what was told to me as a '52 CJ3A around since than.  I finally have the time and need to finish the renovation that he started so long ago.  I have some questions.  The casting number on the block is 638632 W4 A N1-CR-N2 with a small CC above the W4.  It's a clock block that reads 12 2. The serial number above the water pump appears to be J-80966 with the small numbers of 04-  00 in the lower right hand corner.  The head has " Firing Order 1-3-4-2, Tappet Clearance Engine Cold Intake 014 Exhaust 014" with the numbers "10 13, 840161 Z (or N on it's side), W8" on the front top of the head.  I think this is an MB engine.  It has the Purolator oil filter(with Military Products stamped on the cover)  on the left front.  Does any of this tell me what year this engine is or what it is?  The date on the transmission shows 4-29-49.  Thanks for the help.

EVERYTHING ELSE, General tips / Shipping a Tub Long Distance
« on: March 11, 2016, 08:33:57 PM »
Ive been looking for a replacement tub for many years.  It is hard to find a good one here in the Northeast.  I think Ive found one that I can work with, in Georgia.  It will be cheaper to have it trucked to Maine than for me to make the four day, 2,400 mile roundtrip.  I know many of you may have either had bodies shipped or know of someone who has.  How should a tub be palletized (or not) to make that kind of trip without it being damaged by what may be many truck changes and stuff being packed in, on, and around it?  I would appreciate any and all help you may have.  Thanks, Terry

Engine compartment / Re: Unsticking a frozen engine...

ï¿½ Nate, I think you've seen this before:

["Machinist's Workshop" recently published information on various penetrating oils. The magazine reports they tested these products for "break out "torque" on rusted nuts and bolts. A subjective test was made of popular penetrating oils, with the unit of merit being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" bolt.
Average torque load to loosen nut:

No Oil used ........................516 foot pounds
 WD-40 ..................... ........238 foot pounds
 PB Blaster .........................214 foot pounds
 Liquid Wrench ......................127 foot pounds
 Kano Kroil .........................106 foot pounds
 ATF/Acetone mix..................... 53 foot pounds

The ATF/Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50/50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test.]

ï¿½ You've used the 'ZEP 45' before. How does that work? Terry

Rambling, Malarky, Rants, Etc... / Re: ATTN: Northeast flatty owners

Nate, like you know, we don't have an organized club in this part of the country at all that I know of.  Here in Maine there are many flatfenders of all kinds throughout the state.  Even for us within just one state, travel distance is a problem.  I believe that if we had an annual gathering, rotating around our states, we would come.  Just like the Field of Dreams.  Terry

ï¿½ dadsjeep here in Kennebunkport. Is the plate the old yellow in color, or white? I have an old yellow one somewhere around here. I have no idea what year tag is on it. I know, in your travels around the state, you've seen the guys that have wall papered the garage walls with their old plates. If you can find one of those you may find a '55 tag. I'll be looking for one. Are you any where near Rt 15?
