Thanks again for a great response. I will keep looking and I’ll let you know what I find. I wish that those posts still had pictures. They would probably be very helpful.

Rus,

Thank you so much for your lengthy reply. You’ve given me a lot of resources to continue my research. It is fascinating that you often hear about this one size fits all approach to early CJ‘s. I’m finding more and more that to not be the case. And really it seems like 3b’s are the most difficult to find for other than maybe some of the military versions.  I will look into some of the resources you provided. And in the end I may not be able to settle for exactly the way that it should be, and may have to use another seat and make it work.

Do you have any experience or know anyone who has had experience with that website you referred? somarmotor.com?  I’m just not familiar with them, and I have been burned trying to buy parts from online vendors that I haven’t heard of before.

BODY and trim / What’s the deal with late 3b seats?
« on: September 11, 2022, 09:40:15 AM »
I have a 60 3b and I need seats. Can anyone tell me what seats will fit in this thing?  The drivers side attaches to the bottom of the door frame, unlike a 3a and early 3b, and the passenger seat hinges are pulled further in and don’t rest in the edge of the toolbox like others. I have heard maybe some cj5 or m38a1 seats might fit, but haven’t heard anything definitively. Also none of the reproduction suppliers I can find sell a “late” 3b seat option. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I included some pics of what I’m talking about as well as a new m38a1 seat that might work.

Thanks for the reply’s. I just need to figure out if I want to take the chance in some used rims that may need tubes or spends the $$ on new reproductions. All of your insight was very helpful.

They do appear to have a small hole. That would be consistent because I believe they did come off of an M38.

I’m looking at buying some used wheels and I am trying to figure out if they have to use tubes or can be used for tubeless tires. Is there an easy way to determine this?  Also is there a good reason to use tubes?  Thanks!  Btw does this look like a stockish wheel?

I am looking for a good book on early automotive education for myself and my son as we work on our new/old CJ. I already bought the service manual. I saw a post earlier recommending an older book called Automotive Fundamentals by Venk. Any other suggestions? Looking for the basics here. Also if I have the service manual is there any reason to get the parts list as well?

I can’t tell what I’m looking at. It looks like there are 2 master cylinders? If you look at the picture 1 feeds into 2 which then goes out to the brakes. But then there are these hoses that connect to #2, the intake manifold, and the mystery cylinder #3?  I would imagine these probably were originally with this straight six. But I just can’t figure out how all this works.

Thanks for the advice. It’s sometimes hard to know how much to do right now. Here’s the challenge I have got. I really want to take it back to stockish. I’m not worried about everything perfect but I like the stock look. Unfortunately there is some significant work that will need to be done. First of all it has an old Chevy straight six. It’s not currently running so I am left with the choice of working in that and getting it going with that motor which I will probably change at some point, or just jumping into an engine swap. I have a friend that has an F head he is not using. It’s hard to know what to do. I am excited to drive it, but just need to figure out where to put my time and money.

Hey thanks for adding me!  My name is Andrew Davis and I live in Salt Lake City Utah. I just recently bought a 1960 CJ3B that was sitting in the desert for at least the last 20 years. This is my first Willys, jeep, and project vehicle. I have to admit that I don’t know a lot. But this is something I’ve always wanted to do, and I have always wanted a Willys since I was a boy. I’m really excited to get going on this and to learn from all of your experience and insights. Thank you in advance!
