Gearboxes and axles / Re: Stuck in 3rd
« on: October 23, 2022, 05:26:47 PM »
Sorry I haven't replied sooner, but haven't had time to investigate further. Just getting over a bout of covid. I plan on draining the fluid tomprrow, so I can see the bottom gears better. I'll keep you all posted when I find something.

Gearboxes and axles / Stuck in 3rd
« on: October 16, 2022, 07:31:45 PM »
I took my CJ3a for another ride, and on the way home, the transmission got stuck in 3rd gear. I limped it home and removed the shifter, and it seems to be stuck in side the transmission. The large rear gear is sliding freely, but the two front ones, which I assume are 2nd and 3rd, won't slide at all.
Any one have any suggestions what i can do short of pulling the transmission out? It's looking more and more inevitable that it's coming out by my hands or someone else's.

Gearboxes and axles / On the road again, but leaking.
« on: October 14, 2022, 08:29:20 PM »
Today was my first road trip with my CJ3a. After months of hard work, it paid off with a ride for about 10 miles. When I got home, and put it in the garage, I noticed transmission gear oil coming out of the drain hole in the bell housing. I'm assuming the transmission seal. I'm not sure if I should pull it my self, or take it to a shop and get it done. How hard is it to pull the transmission, and is there any special tools required to replace the transmission seal.
I feel pretty confident when it comes to the motores and other stuff, but don't have any experience with transmissions.

Any advice will be appreciated. Is there any additive out there that may rejuvenate the seal, and maybe slow it down for awhile, like a stop leak.

BODY and trim / Re: Windshield Latches
« on: September 01, 2022, 10:01:58 AM »
Hi guys
Yes, I drilled the holes in the latch. My plan was to take the latch apart, and shorten the middle links, or use a pin to hold the windshield down. I bought the several months ago, and just now getting around to mounting the windshield, so not sure Walck's can help me. I thought perhaps ordering from another vendor, and see if they fit.

BODY and trim / Windshield Latches
« on: August 31, 2022, 08:37:15 AM »
Hi all!
I purchased a set of windshield latches from Walck's, and they don't seem to be the correct latches. I double checked the product page, and it refers to the CJ3a. But as you can see by the pics, the latches are to long, and won;t latch. The bottom part of the latch seems to be to far out too. The windshield sits about a 1/4 inch in on the cowl. Is this the correct placement of the windshield. The windshield hinges are adjusted as far back as allowed.
Has anyone else experienced this problem where the latches don't seem to be the correct fit?

I also am in need of the vent stop. Are they still available?

BODY and trim / CJ3a windshield vent
« on: August 30, 2022, 12:58:54 PM »
I bought a used windshield for my cj3a, and it has the lever on the vent, but not sure what locks it. I can't find any reference to the locking mechanism on any parts sites.

I'm hoping someone can take a pic and post it, so I can get an idea of what I need to find or fabricate.
Thanks in advance.

Electrical Systems / Cj3a hand wiper
« on: August 18, 2022, 10:23:09 AM »
Hi all,
I'm installing an electric wiper motor on my cj3a, on the drivers side. I considered the original vacuum style, but remembered the air assist wipers on my Freightliner, and how crappy they worked, and decided to cheat with the electric.

On the passenger side i want to put on the original hand operated wiper, but seem to be having a problem finding one. I found out from online, the cj2a, and cj3a wipers are of different lengths. I found several sources for the cj2a, bur not a single one for the cj3a.

Does anyone have any sources that have one for the cj3a?

Electrical Systems / Re: Signal Lights
« on: August 18, 2022, 10:11:44 AM »
Thanks for the replies. The switch I'm attempting to install is an Amazon special, JDMSPEED New Chrome 12V Universal.
I have a buddy that has  an old car junk yard, and I'm going to see if I can just use an old style flasher unit and try that, before I spend money on a new one.

I was looking online, and on the two prong flasher style, the tell tale (blue wire) is grounded, and on the 3 prong it connects to the flasher. I was thinking the flasher it self needs to be grounded, but the flasher is plastic, and no way to ground it.

Still trying to figure these signals out, and I plugged the flasher in at an angle so the wire for the tell tale bulb doesn't connect, and the flasher stops in the center position as it should, and all the lights work, but the tell tale bulb doesn't work.
So for some reason the tell tale wire going into the switch is powering the flasher. But whether  it's a bad flasher or a bad switch is anyone's guess. I guess if I need to, I can cut the wire to the tell tale, and just not have indicators until I figure it out.

Hi Percy
Thanks for the response. Mine is a constant flash. The flasher unit isn't shutting off when the switch is in the central position. My hazard lights work, and signals work as they should in conjunction with the brake lights. When the switch is in the center position, none of the lights are coming on. It just continues to flash the red indicator light.

Electrical Systems / Signal Lights
« on: August 15, 2022, 11:35:11 AM »
Hi all,
I'm installing after market signal lights on my CJ3a. I wired the switch according to the manufacture's wiring diagram.
The signal lights work, but when I return the switch to the center position, the red hazard light indicator flashes.
I purchased an electronic 3 prong flasher unit, and am wondering if the electronic flasher meant for LED's is incompatible with incandescent bulbs, or the switch I purchased is defective.
Has any one else ran into a similar issue?
Maybe I need to get a mechanical (old style) flasher. I wouldn't think it would matter, but I'm kinda stumped as to what I should try next.
Below is the diagram from the manufacturer.
