Frozen motor with visible flaky rust on pistons as viewed through spark plug holes. Has PTO with bent driveshaft. I know I have to rebuild just about every component but I worry about the transmission, clutch, transfer case etc. I have never dealt with those. How do I determine that they need a rebuild, if at all? Same question with axles. Frame is great so I’ll be cleaning, scraping and degreasing for a while. While I wait, gonna pull the head, clean the rust, and fill cylinders with mystery oil. I really do want to build a new 51 so the advice will be used and appreciated. Thanks.... I found you can use the M.O.R.E YJ shock mounts with a little modification to fit the M38, should work for the 3a also.<br /><br />They attached to the stock mounts, you will need to remove the pin on the YJ mount and drill into the frame and use a 3/8” spacer at the stock mounting point. The front mounts are spot welded in and the rears are stick welded. but the rears have a reinforcement plate on the under side that is spot welded in. Which is in the correct position for a 3a. In all my research I noticed that Willys mounted the spare tire on the passenger side of the body for most of the lifespan of the flatfender Jeeps, except for some small blip in the CJ2A run....but anyway, I noticed that some CJ's came with wood dampeners screwed to the side of the tub over the wheel opening. Today I thought I'd take a look at my original body side panels for evidence of the wood block...(Very happy I haven't thrown them out yet...I keep referring back to them during my resto).<br />And sure enough, I found the holes as well as a "signature" of where the wood block used to be due to corrosion and different color of paint. If you look at the pix, you can see where the block was to the right of the 6 inch ruler...it's at about a 45 deg angle.<br />But the interesting part is I noticed that the driver side panel had the very same holes in the very same mirrored spot. Everything matched up. See my attached pictures...<br />Now while my Jeep was extremely worn out, it had remarkably few changes in it's life. The other holes are from me drilling out spotwelds, but close inspection reveals the dampener holes are indeed have no burrs from drilling...I'm sure they're factory stamped.<br />The most info I found about these dampeners is on the CJ3B page, but they don't mention anything about the holes being on both sides....Wondering if anyone else can comment on whether they too have holes in the driver side of their CJ3A's?<br />So that's my observation, and just kinda cool to find this stuff. The thrust washer that rides against the case on the small end of the cluster gear (part 640411) has a tab that should engage on a shoulder in the transmission case to prevent this washer from turning. It appears someone was previously in my transmission and ground the shoulder on the case down such that the washer now turns with the cluster gear. Has anybody ran into this issue before? Any suggestions? <br /><br />Another question I have is on the end play of the cluster gear assembly. The service manual states there should be .012-.018" of end play on the cluster gear. I haven't yet figured out a way to put my dial indicator on the shaft but it doesn't feel like there is any end play in the assembly. I installed a NOS cluster gear from Ron Fitzpatrick Jeep Parts and the thrust washers and bearings are from the Novak master rebuild kit. I have a Jeep CJ-3a that is used as an on-farm rig, pulling pipe trailers, doing irrigation runs. Fairly light duty, lots of starts. <br /><br />The problem I am having is this; The jeep starts great, throttles up fine, and will get me about halfway across the farm (about a mile) before the problem shows up. It starts dying when any throttle is applied, and seems to be flooding out(?).<br /><br />I rebuilt the Carb, completely to specs (float at 3/8 w/o gasket, etc.), cleaned ever nook and cranny, blew out the jets, checked all settings, checked the gaskets and the heat gap, fuel filter, etc. Still does it. Runs fine until it warms up a bit, then as throttle is applied it dies. hard to restart, but if you catch it soon enough and let off the throttle, it will recover to an idle. <br /><br />Brand new plugs, that seem to be very excessively fouled for how new they are, making me think flooding.That said, everything is set right, float checked, needles checked, jets, etc. Doesn't seem to be anything electronic related. I'm stumped. No readable vin, no registration, no drivable Willys!<br /><br />So is there any place that can re-stamp the serial plaque and it be legal. I would hate to loose all the hard work put into this jeep, as getting a new title where I live is next to impossible.
