The last two weeks have been spent completing bodywork on the tub and getting it ready to paint. For anyone who hasn't painted one of these yet, let me tell you something. There are an unreal amount of seams, crevices, holes and corners that have to be scuffed/sanded! Between my friend and I, we have painted quite a few different vehicles both old and new from tractors to cars to lawnmowers and everything in between. This jeep tub has been the most difficult and time consuming! My boss is real excited to help me restore the 3A. I took a day off only to find he tore into it when things got slow. I returned to find all the body to frame bolts cut, steering shaft unsuccessfully pulled from the box and other items cut in an attempt to free the tub from the frame.. I am going to have to watch him closely and slow him down. The tub is in pretty rough shape, though I know many have repaired worse. I am on the fence as to replacing the tub. The dash, firewall and all metal forward looks good, but the rest is well beyond my skills. She was running when I pulled her in, quite a bit of white smoke on start-up which clears when warm. This project started back in 2008 when I was 14. There was no particular reason why I did. I just felt like doing it. <img rel="::)" src="https://cj3apage.com/3Ayabbfiles26/Templates/Forum/default/rolleyes.gif" alt="Roll Eyes" title="Roll Eyes" /> It was your typical New England plow jeep. Body and frame were rusty and crusty. Surprisingly, it had no jeep lean. Maybe that is because it had the heavy duty leaf springs. It came with a 4 way plow which I still have and will probably never use. It was pretty stock and wasn't too bubbafied. The wiring was a mess and bubba did make the body "solid" with pop rivets, aluminum flashing and lots of bondo. It ran great, tranny and transfer case were rebuilt several years before I got it, and it stopped somewhat. Not a bad Jeep to start with. When he closed down his shop he brought the jeep home and put in under his lean-to with the intention of restoring it. Needless to say he never quite got around to starting on the restoration process. Mom and Dad decided to sell their house and most of their belongings including the jeep. No one in the family knew what it was worth or much about the history or obsession with old jeeps. As customers wondered through the yard sale many asked about the jeep with a few stating it would be worth more if it were running. As a full time mechanic I never had much desire to work on cars on my off time let alone restore any. After some thinking I decided if I was going to get it running I might as well restore it. Little did I know that this would turn into a obsession <img rel=":-)" src="https://cj3apage.com/3Ayabbfiles26/Templates/Forum/default/smiley.gif" alt="Smiley" title="Smiley" />. The original ID plate was still on the firewall and I was able to determine that I had a 49 CJ3A. As I went through the restoration process I found that the brakes had been replaced with 11", there were some electrical modifications made, although it was still 6v, and a few other changes but for the most part it seemed original with the exception of the repairs to the tub. I recently found out thanks to Bob W that I have a factory rebuilt engine from the late 50's. I did a full frame off restoration starting in late May of 2012. I bought a cheap sand blaster and did the frame and axles and painted them with rattle can frame paint. I rebuilt the axles, replaced the springs, shackles and shocks, rebuilt the trans and transfer case, rebuilt the engine and before long I had a rolling chassis. The tub and fenders were badly rusted with the floor having been replaced with wood and most of the side panels sheet metaled over. I decided the tub was too far gone for the repairs it would need and for the room I had to work in, mostly the wife didn't want the smell of grinding, welding and filler work getting into the house <img rel=":-)" src="https://cj3apage.com/3Ayabbfiles26/Templates/Forum/default/smiley.gif" alt="Smiley" title="Smiley" />. By December of 2012 I had a reproduction body kit fitted, with the usual problems with tunnel cover not fitting and lining up the fenders, and did my first test drive, all went. After some final fitting I removed the tub, fenders, grill and windshield and sent them to the local body shop for paint. I chose Luzon Red and hopefully they got the color close. I refit the painted body back on and did a test drive on January 15th, the day before I went in for knee surgery. At this time I would say the project is 90% done, I have a few leaks to try and stop, I would like to add a top, and I need to highlight the Willys stamping's to name a few. I didn't find this forum until the majority of the work was done. The expertise that the members bring to the table would have been helpful in trying to keep this project as era correct as possible. Soon, I will restore the tub and fenders. I bought the Jeep with an understanding that ran two years ago prior to being parked. There was also a rumor that the engine had been worked on recently.The former owner died so obviously, there was no way to know any history of the Jeep. Fluids looked good and there were no leaks, so I was optimistic that it might run. Long story short, with little effort and no experience, I got the Jeep running. After a five minute warm-up the engine purrs like a kitten. Hubs work, tranny works in all modes, no funny noises or smoke. Only glitch is that the carb seems a bit cranky, but I figure a bit of running might smooth it out as well. I am feeling lucky...time to buy some lottery tickets! Now that I know that engine and drive train work, next weekend will start the process of tub removal. From what I have read on this forum so far, the steering wheel promises to be a real joy. The trail got narrow and the speed was high. I ended up tangling with a few trees and shrubs. The result? A substantial scratch that ran the length of my Willys, ODie. I was devastated, but didn't want to dampen the mood with my disappointment. When I got home, I quickly cleaned the mud, dirt and dust off ODie. I ordered new stencils from Military Stencils, then got busy removing the brackets, footman loops etc... The scratch wasn't deep, but it couldn't be buffed out. Semi-gloss paint has many advantages, but buffing out a scratch isn't one of them. Anyhow, today I went to the local body shop and had them use their forklift to lift the red jeep off the white one, so I could sell them separately as nobody seemed interested in a stack of jeeps... The unloading went without a hitch, which was a relief. I'd been planning all sorts of Rube Goldberg ways to unload the jeep for years, and this was so obvious and simple, once I figured out they had a forklift that would do it. I have been meaning to do a write up about my 3A but, I have been so engrossed in disassembly I have not gotten around to it. On an impulse I bid and subsequently won a 1952 CJ3A on EBay. It was found in a repossessed storage locker in upstate NY. As a part of the purchase I was given a lease until the end of April and possession of all the items within the storage locker. Well, after about a month of listening to my wife gripe about my recent purchase. I took a day off from work and traveled over to take a look. The body is in pretty rough shape, the vin plate was no longer on the firewall. I did later find it in a baggy of parts. I have to be honest. The visit really fired me up to work on the unit. I have been obsessively reading this forum and others for tips and tricks. My only concern was the strength of the frame. In some of the photos you can see how pitted the frame is. I planned on bringing the frame into my shop where we have a 10x10 sandblasting booth. However, my obsession was fueled and while hunting around craigslist I found a CJ3A frame listed for $250.00. I sent off an inquiry to the owner and he told me to come take a look. I was not expecting much when I got to his house. What I found blew me away. It was a CJ3A rolling chassis and it was in GREAT shape. Well, I found out quickly that one jeep is never enough… I purchased the chassis and brought it into my shop to disassemble it. I used our 15 ton house crane to disassemble it. By far it was the fasted strip down I think I have ever done. Knowing this frame was far better then the one in NY, I sandblasted it and prepped it for paint. When it was ready and I was talking to a paint jobber about what I was looking to accomplish and one of my employees asked why I wouldn’t just galvanize it. I did a little research and found a place in Massachusetts that hot dip galvanized to ASTM A-123 standards. I hemmed and hawed about galvanizing it. I did not want to have to take a day off from work to drop it off and then have to take another day off to pick it up. This is where fate stepped in. The next day after I spoke with the galvanizing company a customer of ours called and requested a pick up. This customer was 9 miles away from the galvanizing facility. Soooo the decision was pretty easy. I had my truck driver drop the frame off last month and it was agreed that I could pick it up this week. While I have been waiting for the frame I have had time to strip the engine and sent it off to the machine shop. I have disassembled the transmission. The transmission was kind of a heart breaker. It was filled with water. Where gears and sprockets used to be was a giant ball of rust. I was worried that the transfer case would also be as rough as the transmission. To my surprise it was in remarkably great shape. I stripped the transfer case last night 03/19. The transfer case along with the transmission case is in our parts washer as I speak. I will be bead blasting them in the next few days and probably running them through our bake oven in hopes of having the iron release some of the absorbed oils. Once cleaned and prepped I will begin painting them and likely reassemble both units next month after parts are procured. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. I was supposed to fly out with my wife to Vegas on February 12th to be in a wedding for a friend of mine. Well, good old New England weather prevented the wife and I from flying out. So, I received a refund for my trip. Much to her chagrin I plan on using this money to purchase a body kit (it was my money used to purchase the entire vacation, so I think it’s fair). My plan of attack is this. I am going to get the frame back tomorrow. Set it up on jack stands. Finish the transmission and transfer case and install them in the next 3-4 weeks. Get the engine back sometime in April to begin rebuilding that. The original 3A that starting this whole fiasco (my wife’s description), needs to be moved by the end of April. When I bring it home I will use that body and tub as a “Chinese blueprint” for the body placement along with where to run the wiring harness among other things. The frame needs to be weathered for 6 months or more before I paint it. So, I plan to build the jeep, and then tear it down to paint the body panels and frame. Well, that is the plan anyway…. I'll start off with a little history. Bought this Jeep out of Georgia 3 years ago. It had an F-head, with a side draft carburetor installed. This allowed the f-head install without cutting the hood. It also has a Warn overdrive as well as a Harrison "Admiral Hat" heater. Drove it for a while then decided I wanted to go back original. Found a couple of L-heads locally, (one is at the machine shop currently) then stripped the Jeep to the frame. Along the way I bought a powder coating gun and bought a used oven off of Craigslist. (One of the best purchases I've made). The front clip is in great shape but the tub isn't in the greatest of shape. I may go with a Juan. Don't look for this to get updated too often as I am slow. My father and I spotted this gem in the woods at a old resort. The ole girl actually had a small sapling growing in the back of her. From what we can gather it was originally a snow plow truck at the Milwaukee airport. The owners that had it before us purchased it in the 80's. We did get the plow with the jeep. It was it a old v plow. The plow has since been attached to a bobcat attachment and sold. Christmas day we un-tarped her and put her in the shop. My father is a retired farmer and once he starts he is unstoppable. We have completely disassembled it and took the engine to shop to get it tuned up. Unfortunatly it has two bad cylinders. The tub was beyond repair so we ordered a new one. I work at a fabrication shop so I have blasted the frame and made new bumpers. I am sure I will be making all kinds of things for it. I was given a 1949 Willy’s CJ3A by my grandpa five years ago when I was 14. Yes that makes me 19. He said I could only have it if I had it running by my 16th birthday, he got first ride, and if I started it I had to finish it. In the first year and a half before I turned 16 I pulled the motor and rebuilt everything. The carter carb gave me quite the headache. Even took that to be professionally rebuilt and it still quit on me <img rel=":'(" src="https://cj3apage.com/3Ayabbfiles26/Templates/Forum/default/cry.gif" alt="Cry" title="Cry" />. But I had it running on time. When I learned to drive it I gave grandpa first ride. Now three years later and a move from Colorado to Kentucky, I met a body and paint guy and we set out to finish it. He joked that I should get a welder and learn how to weld and he would help me paint it. Little did he know I would take home up on it. It had the "death wobble" with the Kelly Safaris that were on there when I bought it. They were 235-75-15's. I just bought a brand new set of Goodyear Wrangler Radials...same size as the Kellys. Wobble is even worse now. With the Kellys it was at about 40 mph. With the Wranglers it is about 25ish mph as I was decelerating at the time. I've had others tell me that those tires r just too heavy. I've had some tell me it is bad king-pin bearings. Others say your front axle needs to be replaced. But I c damage to the front frame members also. Not severe but definitely a wave in the metal very near the radiator on both frame members. Like a front-end collision has occurred at some point. Could all of these be linked to my death-wobble issue? What is the best starting place at trying to fix this? She was very original and most of the parts like seats, engine, t96 gb,vaccum wiper motors, dry gauze air filter and most of bolts screws and bolts,APSO /SAEPD parking lights and to add to the list and original Firestone spare 6.70*15 tyre were on the Jeep. The paint is a brown color that looks in many places as if it was brushed on. There is rust in the floor boards under the front seats. It is pretty bad and affects the channels underneath and even some mounting points to the tub.
