I tapped on the horn to say hey to the neighbors and the horn stuck on. The brass contact disc was just laying on the point contact. I am drawing a blank. I thought there was an inside lip in the cap to hold the brass contact. If I put the the disc back in nothing is holding it in place. I still had running lamps and taillights, but the dash lights would turn off when headlights turned on. I used some wire and bypassed the switch so I could get home figuring the switch went bad. I recently installed new omix light and dimmer switches, matching the wires exactly as removed. However, the same issue remains and now my ignition switch does not kill the motor. The wiring is original, but upgraded to 12v and I'm starting to think maybe the insulation somewhere has worn between two wires. Has anyone experienced something like this before or any suggestions before I start checking everything with the ohmmeter? Thanks in advance. I have a few questions about the wiring. The Jeep already has a 8 pin socket, wiring is taken straight from the taillights. I still have to look into how it's set up exactly and which pin is what. But about the wiring for the trailer though. -For 6 volts the thicker the wire used the better right? For the 12 volt lights i did not use the thickest wire possible (1,5mm2). So not to loose to much current and brightness of the 6 volt taillights, replacing them with thicker core wires (2,5 or 3mm2) is better!? -Ground!? The taillights are now setup grounded through the socket, there is/was a separate pin for ground on the TJ. Is this the same for the 6 volt system or do the 6 volt lights need to be grounded to the trailer? I've had a short talk to someone who converted his Bantam trailer from 24 to 6 volt for his 1943 Willys and he told me he had a hell of a time and a lot of problems!? Alternator, 12V battery, etc. I run the positive cable from the battery to the starter and a wire from the starter to the AMM gauge.....the jeep cranks a runs fine as long as the AMM gauge is hanging out of the dash...if I put the AMM gauge in the dash and start to crank it the gauge starts arching fire off the dash. Is the AMM gauge supposed to have a rubber ring or something to keep it from doing this??? I have ordered a whole new set of 12V gauges from Kaiser/Willys but I would like to make sure the wiring is correct and if the gauge is just faulty. It would stick on a number and climb but not go down immediately. Not jumping around but irritically climb all the way up to hundred km/h lol then stick at 40 when stopped, taking off again it would either pickup the right speed for a moment or add up to what it stood on when i stopped. First thing i checked was the cable which was fine, not broken, well lubricated and clean. So i turned to the meter itself. The needle moved by hand without a problem. Took it out, lubricated it thoroughly through the oiling hole on the back until it spinned a bit better. Put it back but still the same problem. Gently opened up the bezel to take a look inside. It was nice and clean on the inside, there was some axial play on the magnetic shaft. Worse was the play on the tiny needle shaft and "cup" that spins inside the magnetic shaft end. I heard a ever so slightly ringing sound when spinning it. While very slowly and very gently spinning the magnetic shaft it picked up the needle and stuck at 40, when turning ever so slightly further it "disengaged and dropped until another full turn where it stuck again. When spinning fast by hand it does not get stuck and i just sometimes hear it chaffing the magnetic end. There is both axial and radial play on de needle shaft. Question is how do i take the needle shaft out to see where that play is located and if i can perhaps shim it? There are 2 screws holding the dial face and 2 screws underneath that which you cannot reach without taking the dial face off. How is the needle secured? Is it a matter of gently pulling it off or is it locked somewhere? I did not see any obvious point? There are some topics out there about repairing the dial face with new decals but none tell how to remove the needle!? It's the original CJ3A "kick" starter. It does work but it's definitely got a crusty bendix and I do get gear stripping. I'm sure running faster than designed isn't helping. I've investigated rewound Autolites as well as the modern aftermarket "hi torque" starters offered by several vendors. They are both rather high dollar. The modern starter intrigued me as it appears they are common Denso OffSet Gear Reduction (OSGR) starters with adapters for our old engines. Other Denso starters are relatively cheap and I can't reconcile why a simple adapter would triple (or even more) the cost. Since I like odd projects, I thought I'd try to adapt a Denso myself. After researching loads of different Denso OSGR starters, it appeared to me that a Denso used for Harley Davidson Sportsters would be readily adaptable. It's got a 9 tooth pinion and the front housing looks easy to slap an adapter plate to it. They are also less than 60 bucks on Amazon. I was all set to buy one but while perusing my local swap meet, I chanced upon a Power Master (3rd party "hot rod" 'Hi torque" starter manufacturer) #9504 starter meant for small block Fords. I bought it for 20 bucks. These starters are also of the Denso design. The biggest problem was it was an 11 tooth pinion. Not a big deal as they are replaceable. I scoured the internet and found a 9 tooth Denso pinion on Walmart.com of all places. It was $14 dollars to my door. I took the starter apart and swapped the pinion gear.
