Just joined from South Africa
« on: December 10, 2012, 05:44:05 AM »
Hi to everyone

My name is Marc, I live in South Africa in a town called Springs. By trade I am an Airplane Structures Engineer.

While I do not own a Jeep of any sorts (okay some models and die casts), I have grown up with them around me. My dad had a yellow Jeep (still going, but with a different owner now), may have been a CJ-3A or CJ-2A with Perkins diesel in it and then his friends have as well, all of course highly modified for off road events.

Having always had an interest in all things Jeep, my addiction to these marvelous vehicles was again sparked when I saw 3 for sale in less than a month close to home. 2 were great (CJ-2A & CJ-3A) and then one more 2A in somewhat poor shape at a high price.

My son, Jarred has the jeep bug as well now & he is only 12, he asked if we could get one. For now it is not possible, then as a compromise we decided to build one from scratch.

A 1/2 scale CJ-2A. ( I know, a CJ-3A site but,,,,all things Jeep)

My drawings are progressing well (the 2A I saw for sale was bought by the dealers son and now lives on the floor for all see) and he lets me measure up as & when I/we need to. I/we will be going this week end to confirm some more numbers on the front end.

For now 1/2 is better than none, also I have started the drawings for a 1/2 scale Bantam trailer to go with the 1/2 Jeep.

Until later.

Welcome Marc,

That sounds like a very cool project. Can't wait to see the pics when you get going. What are your plans for a motor? This should be interesting. Any time you can spend with your son in the garage is precious. Enjoy and keep us posted

Hello Marc, and welcome.
ï¿½Most of my adult life I was in aviation. I have an engineering degree in aeronautics, a commercial pilot's license, and am a licensed airframe and powerplant mechanic. I worked for several years in the McDonnell Douglas fabrication facility in Salt Lake City, Utah, where we manufactured the fuselage and other components of MD-80s and MD-90s prior to the Boeing buyout. Now I have graduated to Jeep Mechanic. My CJ-3A was restored in an aircraft facility. It was very helpful to have all the tools and equipment at my disposal.

ï¿½Please keep us informed of your 1/2 scale Jeep project. Sounds very interesting. Please scan and post some of your drawings. Pics of completed parts and assemblies would be great. Good luck with your project.

HI

Aviation & Jeeps...........a really terrible combination to suffer from. My son has it to...both of them.

One non related Jeep topic, an MD man, wonderful. Before closure of 1Time Airline last month I looked after their mixed fleet of MD82's & 87's structures wise. Now I have to play on 737's...hmmmmm. In the Engineering Department we were cut from 22 people to just 4 now.
Stressful times. (my first ever airplane worked on was a C-47)

Drawings are still under way, I must measure up some more the week end, namely the grill and inside fender details that I have not yet done in detail. I will post the drawings when I have the completed ones, still doing them the old fashioned way on a drawing board with a T-Square...I prefer the old way.

Yours looks great in the hanger.

Hi

Been awhile since I first posted but I have done some on the 1/2 scale project.

I did all the drawings I need with the help of a CJ-2A I found close to home and I have unlimited access to for measurements.

I have cut out both left and right side panels and already formed the left and right lower cowl panels. When seeing the photos bear in mind these are not complete yet, drain hole must still go in and final dressing still required.

For now that's it.

Should the photos not be attached, I will try again, but the connection at work is slow and it keeps bombing out on me.

Flyingfish,
Good to see you back on the 3A Page.  The one photo that posted looks great.  We're anxious to see the other photos.  This is going to be an exciting thread to follow.  Perhaps you should move it from the Introduction section to the Rambling, Malarky, Rants, Etc., section a little farther down on the page and post it under Willys Photo and Story Threads.  We'll be watching for your progress.  Good luck with your intriguing project.
