Hood Hinge Options
« on: January 27, 2022, 08:41:03 AM »
How about replacing the stock piano style hood hinge on a flat fender with hood hinges from a cj5?
Has anyone done this? Seems simple enough. How does it look? Any pics out there?
I ask because my replacement hood from MD Juan has the hinge welded on out of square and it looks like I will have to remove it, align it properly and weld it back on. I was considering installing some cj5  style hood hinges.
Any feedback would be good.
Thanks
Mike

I'm thinking two things.  One, the hood sheet metal might need reinforcing under flat area of bolt-on locations of CJ5 hinges, or two, ask MD Juan for a "replacement hinge" since you will have to "cut off" the one "they did wrong" (preferred, if it were my project).  Good Luck!

Thanks Steve, yes I would definitely need to reinforce the hood and probably the cowl as well.

I have a pair of M38A1 hood hinges that I planned at one time to use on my CJ3B. They are very similar to CJ5 hinges, but IIRC, they can come apart like tailgate hinges. I’d take $30 for the pair, plus shipping. Let me know if you’re interested.

Thanks Bruce. Still trying to decide which way I’m going with the hood hinges.

I bought an MD Juan hood years back when at a cross road about my hood.  The replacement hood hinge made the hood sit way too high with no adjustment possible.  I ended up removing that hinge and replacing it with the hinge from my original hood and it sits much better.  Then wouldn't you know it, I came across a great looking original which I now have installed.

Added:  Actually, after finding an image, it was the whole rear hat channel support.  The rational was the hinge was attached to the hat channel.  The channel was correctly shaped to fit the cowl/firewall seam.  Sheet metal would be easier to manipulate to conform without the MD Juan hat channel support.

Thanks Rus,

that makes good sense. The only way I can get my hood to fit correctly in the rear on the cowl is if the front at the grill is way ahead on the drivers side and way back on the passenger side. Everything is good and square with the firewall, fenders and the grill. When I line it up with the good hinge unbolted from the cowl I can get it nice and square all the way around but the hinge is not square to the cowl. I am considering cutting the hinge off and rewelding it square.

I haven made this permanent yet but I think I am going to replace the original piano hinge with these cj7 hinges. It allows me to get the hood aligned properly and I like how it looks.
