Hood Lacing (anti-rattle)
« on: November 25, 2020, 11:12:04 AM »
On my 1964 CJ3B, the hood lacing is held to the grill by metal spring clips, not the split rivets found on earlier models. One of my old clips broke. I have looked around on the internet but have not found a source for these clips. Does anyone know where I might find these clips? I'd like to replace all of them if I can.  Thanks!

I believe they are called "Wire Moulding Clips"

I have a catalog from a company called Restoration Specialties:

https://www.restorationspecialties.com/

That have a lot.  The illustrations are (their words), "full size" so you may be able to identify very closely which one may fit.  I suspect they could help identify which one you'd need with the needed info.

Thanks, Rus. Looks like they have them, page 120. I will take some photos of mine and send them an e-mail and see if they can match them.

Well, I had to buy a package of 100 to get the 16 I need! If anybody needs some, let me know!

Now that I have my hood on, I have decided that I don't like this style clip. The clips stick proud of the wind lacing and rub on the hood. I now have a small scratch in the new paint! I think I will go back to the old split rivets.

Chuck,
That sounds frustrating.

I wish I knew more about these clips, I've just never seen them up close.  Using the image I shared earlier, could the clips not be pressed or "coaxed" into the welting more?

I tried, but the two ridges on the wind lace hold the clips up. I think the rivets will fit fit down in between them, at least they seem to on my M38 grill. Let me know if you need any of the clips, I have a whole box I'll never use! I also now own a split rivet compression tool if you ever need one!

As bcbloc02 says, "Well that ain't good!". Bought new weather strip, bought the rivet tool, but just was not satisfied with the outcome. Could not get the rivets tight enough. Went back to the clips, guess I will have to accept the scratches under the hood.  After I put the clips in, I took a small hammer and a strip of rubber and tried to "seat" the clips into the weather strip a little deeper, but it still rubs the hood.

Not giving up just yet! I took a close look at the split rivets that came in the welting kit and realized that they are nickel plated steel, very hard. I ordered some solid brass split rivets the same size and will experiment with them to see if I can get them to form correctly. I think the softer brass might work better.

Hand in there Chuck!

I've hit a few snags along the way and once resolved, you'll get to move to the next challenge!

I got the brass rivets today, I think they are going to work fine.

I like the rivets much better than the clips.
