Fuel Pump
« on: September 15, 2016, 06:09:04 PM »
I purchased an Omix Ada fuel pump for my CJ 3A and I don't think it's working well. The bowl barely fills up. The car will shut down within 15 minutes of driving. No bogging down or anything, it just shuts down. She will start back up about 5 minutes after sitting. I don't think it is vapor-lock.

Is there a better fuel pump I should put on the Willys? I think this is my problem.

This is the pump I put on...

I bought a new pump for my 3A also last winter when I was redoing it. I had the same problem you are having. Not much fuel in the bowl and cutting out after a short period. I called the seller and was informed that was the way it was supposed to be. The reason being most of the spacers on the original fuel pumps were lost and long gone never put back on. This created too much fuel pressure. These fuel pumps are designed to run without the spacer and deliver the correct fuel pressure. So if you still have that spacer and you are using it you may want to remove it. The spacer was used to reduce the pressure by reducing the stroke of the pump. little fuel in the new pumps bowl is normal and mine has been fine and working well like that. I did put my old one back on and still had the same issue. Run a while and shut off. After thinking about it I knew I had fuel and I knew I had a spark. It came to me that after heating up something electrical was breaking down. Let the engine cool and it would run again for a short time. I replaced the coil with a internal ballast one and changed my condensor. Problem solved. Not sure which part was my problem but one of these parts was breaking down after heating up. I about pulled my hair out over it. I have since found that a few others on here had the same problem and the same fix. Tim was one of them and if he sees this he can give you more help. You may find this hard to believe but it has happened to me and others on here. $20 and replace these parts and you will find out if that's your case. I spent a week on it beating and banging. I have a feeling your pump is fine unless you are using the spacer. Good luck and let us know what you find. Even if your coil and condensor are new its still worth a try with the cheap made parts these days.

Hi Steve,

The fuel pump shown will not fill the glass bowl with fuel.  I can't say that your fuel pump isn't the problem, but it might be an electrical issue.

Specialty already suggested what I would look at.  A failing/degraded coil will have these exact symptoms.  They heat up, then kill your spark.   They cool back down and work for a while.

I have found that if the condenser is bad, the Willys will run, but not very well.  Mine idled rough and had a large noticeable drop in power.

Is your Willys still 6 volt, or is it converted to 12 volt?

Thanks Ronnie & Tim for the feedback. I did change over to 12v. Bought the kit on eBay and seems to be OK.

This is the conversion kit I purchased---

Do you remember what part numbers you used for the coil and condenser?

I think you are right on with the problem I am having. ::Crossing Fingers::

I bought a 3 wire GM alt. ,coil and condenser at Advance. The alt. and Coil were for a early 70's chevelle I think. Both Internally regulated. I got rid of the external ballast. Solved my problem. I really don't think the condenser cares if it is 6 or 12 volt if I remember right. Good luck.

Change the condenser first, I bet that will fix it.
